I have recently obtained an FC ute and the rebuild needs to be as eonomic (ie. cheap) as possible. I have a 149 I can rebuild and I also have a blue 12 port head (3.3?)+ VK Calais injection system. My question is can I shave the head (and/or top of block) enough to get reasonable compression. I only want to be able to run standard ULP. That, plus a Celica steel case 5 speed -I have plenty of those- should make a reasonable weekend cruiser. Intention is to use ball joint front end with HQ discs too. What is best way to get same stud pattern front and rear? Otherwise, I would like to keep body and interior as original as possible so it could always be restored, at a later date, back to fully original. thanks Jeff

If you are looking at economy, a 173 blue would probably be a better option than a 149 with blue head.

Use a 173 blue motor head with the air pump ports blocked off with plugs. All the VK EFI stuff will bolt on and the 173 head has the same combustion chamber as the 149. Biggest problem will be getting the VK ECU to work properly with the much smaller engi |

You can buy HQ discs with early Holden stud pattern. |

The 149 is only a bit larger than the original grey motor at 138. and you would need a engineer report to fit any red motor. Standard compression on the red motors is too high for standard unleaded you would have to use 95 octane.
