Yes they are different, also depends upon which year HQ 350 Statesman you are talking about. There is at least 3 x different generation engines in Statesman. Possibly talk to James at monaromuscleparts for a carby, he may have one. |

Thanks for the replies. Its a 3/74 with adr 27 so does that make a differance? It currently has a holly on it but it came with a rochester in the boot that the second owner put on it when he first got it as the original carby was playing up. As the replacement rochester started to give him greif he gave up on it and put the holly on it about 5 years ago (which is working fine but is not the way I like my cars). Are there numbers on the rochester that can be identified or is it only internal differances. Thanks again Ron

Ron At the end of the fuel section of the Volume 4 HQ workshop manual, is a list of the specs including jet sizes of 308 versus 350 carbs. It does not give the serial numbers (left side of carby main body above secondary throttle shaft) Post these numbers up and someone can possibly ID the carb you have. There is plenty of sites on the web relating to rochester id but not as much on the holden numbers. From memory there is some difference in the base plates as I used to end up with air leaks around the auto choke area on mine. thick gasket was the simplest fix. I had a 74 smog statesman engine in a Hg 30 years ago and it ran noticeably better with a 308 carb than the original 350 rochy. James mentioned above regularly sold monaro carbs so he should know the numbers you need, His number is on his ebay ad http://www.ebay.com.au/i...item3cc46d26f5#ht_742wt_

Thanks Oily the numbers are 17057294 1018 I dont really care if the part numbers dont match , more interested if one off a 308 can be recoed and jetted to suit the bigger 350 motor. Keith thanks for the reply ,hume performance list a reco hq/hj rochester but dont specify if its 308 or 350 so I thought I,d ask here first incase some salesman just tells me they are all the same . Thanks hk1837 I will contact James. PS. every time I see you user name it remindes me of my old hk bathurst monaro as its number plates were HK 818 . Thanks again Ron

your quaddie is a 1977 (possibly 78) so it isnt for a q in any case
170xxxxx are 1976 onwards.
there are a lot of quaddie guides if you google around, there's a great pdf if you can find it. Most will relate to US but you should be able to find what ballpark you are looking for
eg
70YYEDT or 170YYEDT
70: Rochester carbs started with either 70 (before 1976) or 170 (after 1976).
YY: The year code. The years are a little convoluted, but probably the easiest part to remember.
E: The emissions code. 2 is for 49-state emissions, 5 is for California & high altitude. (so your 5 is a smog carb)
D: Division. 0, 1 and 2 are Chevy, 3 is Cadillac, 4 is Buick, 5 is Oldsmobile, 6 and 7 are Pontiac. Rochester doesn't always follow this rule.

sorry screwed that up didnt i, your smog code is 2 not 5, year code is 57 which translates to 1977
1968 28 (or 38 on A.I.R. engines) 1969 29 (or 39 on A.I.R. engines) 1970 40 1971 41 1972 42 1973 43 1974 44 1975 45 1976 56 (the year they started the 170 prefix) 1977 57 1978 58 1979 59 1980 80 1981 81 1982 82 1983 83 1984 84 1985 85 1986 86 1987 87

HK1837 are number plates I have, got many years ago and put away for my red GTS327. They are currently on my V2. |

G'day Ron, just in case you change your mind and want to fit an original HQ 350 carby, I gave James at monaro muscle parts a HQ 350 quadrajet that he has since had rebuilt and may still have. It was from an April '74 HQ 350 so is just about date correct for yours. The part number of the late HQ 350 auto carbies is 7042202.
I had my original carby rebuilt by the same guy that James uses and it made a massive difference to my HQ 350 - it starts well using the factory auto choke setup and runs perfectly with plenty of power, and is more economical than my 253 and 308 powered vehicles.
cheers Rhys

Hi Papaya , yes there is a great difference much beyond jetting . Choke is all different and more , air bleeds (chev only), base gaskets , anti dieseling soldenoid . Dont muck around and put the wrong one on , or the wrong base gasket . You are in luck , one just came on ebay . Read the story. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/w...ewItem&item=290695023070

OK I have blueslipped and registered the stato since my last post and also contacted the second owner of the car (I am the third owner) who said he still had the original carb and would send it to me which he has and sure enough it is the correct numbers but has a bg stamped at the end of it. It obviously needs a rebiuld so I will now start looking in to that. Thanks to all above who have helped Ron
