Hi all was just getting the xw ready for a Sunday cruise when l noticed fuel leaking out of the sender unit in the tank,are they a square seal or round? The seal looks the same diameter as the rubber seal in the cap in a 60 ltr thinners drum,would this seal b alright to use or is there a special seal.thanks.

I'd say if the seal can put up with thinners it's probably going to be OK for petrol. I bought a brand spankers seal from Ford a couple of years ago for my old EB's petrol tank.
Within two months it had turned into a jelly like goo so buying the correct seal can be a total waste of money especially if you have something already that will probably do the job perfectly.
Just don't fully fill your tank until you are 100% sure it's going to work or even soak the seal in petrol overnight to confirm that it will be OK.
Oh and my memory agrees with Cav's memory regarding it being a flat square sided O ring in much the same way as an oil filter seal is but not as thick. |

Thanks Cav n Jim, went through my shed n found a C4 auto seal kit that had a seal that is the same size,just a bit thicker, original one would b squashed,put it in some fuel over night n see what it looks like tomorrow .should b good if it handles transmission oil,and the heat of n auto.

Transmission seal no good swelled up in the fuel,and was told by a auto mechanic they no good with fuel.

That was sort of predictable but I did not think that it would swell up in that sort of time. Trans fluid is vegetable oil and petrol is mineral oil based.
Your thinners seal would work I reckon.
Actually if you used the trans seal it would in theory only get fuel on the inside face of the ring. If that inside face swelled up a bit theoretically the seal would tighten. Trouble is though it might just turn to jelly and fall out followed closely by a tank full of fuel.
As Cav said though why risk it if you can get a new one from Rare Spares that is designed for the job & probably won't cost you more than a few $$. |

Cav no rare spares where I am ,closest is Brisbane ,there is a bearing company up here that makes seals,don't know if they make fuel seals,but yer going to order a new one up so I have no more problems.price $7 plus delivery,Jim the thinners seal not the exact size so not going risk it.thanks for the comments.

that seal is still available new from ford, COAE is the part number prefix, i just bought s dozen fir my cars and sime customers cars, same seal all the way through XR XC, so just go to your local ford dealer and get a fee

Would the XD, XE and XF wagons & commercials have that same seal too? My guess would be yes which is why Ford still bother to stock it. E series wagons have a different seal I know that much which is why they are $26 not $7 a piece. For $7 it would not take you that long to save that money in leaked out petrol. |

The $7 seal is from GT Ford performance where I buy my parts from,but they are in Victoria ,which takes a few weeks to get to me,so I will go to Ford first.

Took the sender unit out of my XD sedan seal is bigger and is a cork seal

XD sedans have a plastic tank.
Wagons vans and utes still had the steel tank of their predecessors. So I'm not suprised that an XD sedan seal won't work in an earlier tank.

C0AF 9276A is ford part number for the seal, i paid $4.30 each for them a few weeks back. buy a few, you never know when ford delete stuff just like that, and yes jimmy, i believe they will do XD commercial tanks

Seals on there way through Ford ,they had to air bag them from ford in Melbourne.I new the wagons and commercial vehicles had steel tank just thought they may have used the same sender unit in the sedans as well ,thanks for the comments.

I'm not that familiar with the fuel tank on an XD but would presume that the sender is much like an XE onwards where it's a big thing held into the top of the tank with a large plastic threaded ring that has a large hose clamp around it to lock it.
The metal tanks all had the ring that you remove and replace with a hammer and screwdriver.
