the central locking on the VR has stopped working, it has been erratic for a few days now. I am pretty sure it is not the key as it is only 15months old and also the spare does not work either.
I think it must be the BCM, if I fit another one does just bolt in or does it have to be done by professionals?

The BCM & keyhead(s) are a matched set, so if you get another BCM you MUST get at least 1 matching keyhead to go with it, otherwise it's junk.

There's a myriad of BCMs too, so you'll need to find another VR with the same trim level & similar options - ie there's a "LOW" BCM but there's also a "LOW" that does cruise & windows, that the other "LOW" doesn't. The part number on them is the main giveaway.
If you don't have power windows or cruise, and your VR is a base model, you can grab any base model VR BCM & keyhead(s) except base ute ones (they don't have c/lock).

However, I'm not so sure it's the BCM. These rarely fail, but if they do, it's often a range of faults that crop up, not just the locking. Do the locks work when you use the key manually in the door lock, or by pressing the button down on the door (when it's closed). If you deadlock it (with the key) can you hear the motors in the other doors clicking over?
Cheers,

Mick

Mick, you beat me to it !!

Many owners confuse central locking with the remote key. One operates the other, but they are separate systems. The central locking system consists of the door solenoids & the various switches which control them. The key remote operates both the engine & the central locking.

As commodorenut has said, does the central locking itself work, even though the remote key does not. You can check this by operating the driver's door snib button (the door must be closed) or operating the door lock with the key. If the central locking does work, your problem my be with the key itself, the BCM or the fuses or wiring to it. If the central locking does NOT work, it may just be a fuse or relay.

One way of testing the key remote is to check if the red flashing immobiliser light operates correctly using the key head.

Terry is referring to the red light on the dash - in the plastic section below the radio.
Cheers,
