I have a 3500chev duallie with 454 on LPG. I have been tossing up on adding a turbo to it for a bit more grunt when I'm towing my trailer.(trailer etc is about 4ton)
I can't find much info about it and was wondering if anyone on here has tried it or knows someone that I can talk to about it.
I was thinking of running it as a draw through with single turbo. Drawback is if you get a backfire, there's pipework for of air & LPG. Although, could it be any worse than a backfire on a petrol draw through?
I can't find any info on blowthrough systems. Gas Research doesn't recommend any of their gas mixers for blow through. Although I'm only looking at 8-10psi which should be plenty.
Also there's issues with LPG not cooling intake the same as petrol does. Maybe water/methanol injection would cover this problem.

NEVER run one draw threw, hundreds of people run GRA blow threw including myself, low psi v8 like yours would be easy tune etc but the gra's wont flow enough to supply 10psi to a 454 IMHO twin GRA or twin IMPCO 425 where abouts are you from? i know a few people around the place but if you want a good read about turbo's and LPG id have a read of my other forum www.xfalcon.com i know its a ford site but there are hundreds of turbo crossflows getting around and the setups wont be any different to what you want just on a smaller scale

Which GRA mixers do you use? On their site they don't recommend them. (Altho maybe only because they don't have any pressure testing certication)
If I'm going to use twin mixers, I might as well use twin turboes. Cost more, but easier, neater set-up for 2 mixers I guess.

twin impco on a dual carby manifold with a custom carby hat would be a real neat easy single turbo setup
i think its a s440, biggest one they made at the time, though iv got a mate who runs 700+rwhp threw 4 gras and i beleive they have custom machined venturis inside and flow about 500cfm each? instead of 440 each
the twin impco's should be good for around 800+cfm which would be fine for a torque monster
the gra's have slight boost leaks around the throttle plates and need the corrct tuned shaft (cant for the life of me remember the name) for boost but its no big deal
i personally only know a few people in melbourne but they might be able to make and send you a kit for you to install etc, id recommend you try lakeside automotive in reserviour but if you want to go GRA go on there website, find there list of fitters in your area and ring around

I'm not chasing any huge HP, as it only has a TH400 in it, and too much HP pulling a heap of weight won't be good for it. Mainly want some power for hills, passing trucks etc.
Maybe seeing the throttle bodies aere so small, might be why it's lazy anyway. My mate has same with 2 GRA mixers on a tunnel ram and it goes great.
Does any of it need to be boost referenced if I set it up as a blow through?
I've been told that gas engines like big open intake manifolds. I've got a spare rootes blower manifold, maybe it would work good if I made a plate for the top to mount mixers on. Haven't got any 2x4 manifolds.
I've got a spare 8.71 rootes as well. Have you ever seen one of those on gas? It might be too dry for a rootes.

Yes needs boost referencing, found the best spot was before the the intercooler, also had to use modified convertors but I'm pretty sure they only changed the springs inside due to low signals from the mixer
Gas motors love big single plain manifolds but my experience is more with 6 cylinders so can't really give you any feedback on that

Is a terra charger same as a vortec?
I think with a rootes it would be too dry, plus no cooling of the rotors from the fuel. Probably work good for a while tho.
I'll probably stick with the turbo idea if I go ahead with it. Just have to do some more research on it all.

A Terra Charger is basically the same as an Eaton M90 like what is fitted to Commodore V6. There is no fuel at all on those rotors. There is no issue with LPG on the Eaton rotors used in the Terra charger.
The inlet manifold on my motor has a spring loaded blow plate. So in a backfire, the plate releases the pressure and springs back down. |
