Thought I would ask the question: I have owned my VS S2 V8 ute now for a few years. All stock but for a cold air intake, which was on it when I bought it. I get about 350 k's before the low fuel light comes on, there is usually around 15lts still in the tank. This is around town driving, carrying normal tradie stuff. No bars or racks. If I do a trip I always empty the back and of course the fuel cons is much better. Towing my race car I get 20Lt/100k's. I have some heavy stuff that I take racing. I sit on about 90-100 km/h when towing.

Would this be expected to be normal for this car? It runs perfectly well, has never missed a beat. It does get regular servicing. Nothing has shown up on the computer checks. And uses hardly any oil, 200,000k's.

PS: Would an SS (twin)exhaust fit the ute?

My VS2 Calais 5L would do 10L/100km going Syd>Bendigo with an empty trailer, but do 16L/100km coming home with a tonne in the trailer & 4 adults in the car. We did a 5 week 7500km trip in it back in '04 and averaged 10L/100km for all of it (2 adults + luggage). Around town it hovered around 14-15L/100km.

One of the things I found helped the economy when towing was shifting it back to 3 well before it wanted it - don't let it labour in 4th (overdrive) around 100km/h as it really chews the juice in that situation - this was the difference between 20L/100 and 16L/100.

There's no difference between an SS and a regular VS. Some (not all) of the HSVs got a twin-cat system that would be a small improvement in flow - whether or not it will improve economy is hard to say, as the stock system isn't overly restrictive.

Thanks Mick. I was always of the impression that the SS had a better exhaust. I don't use cruise when towing and do change back manually, I'll try shifting back sooner and see what difference that makes. I don't have an issue with it normally but I did expect more of it when towing.

The VS SS ute had just only same std exhaust but only the Maloo got a twin exhaust.
3 types of std 5.0L
165 KW
169 KW this got a air snorkel.
179 KW as did this.

Don't you just use the power button when towing.

Forgot to mention mine's a 185kw (HSV enhanced) but the differences aren't enough to have a dramatic affect on economy. It's also running a dual-cat twin 2.5" system.

I always run it in power when towing - simply for the fact the lockup convertor kicks in too early in economy mode, making it susceptible to being overloaded.

When I noted manually shifting back - I'm talking about the slightest labouring when you hit an incline & the speed drops - anywhere from 105-100km/h if you're in a 110 zone - don't wait for it to get down to 95 or 90 before dropping it back.

I do use the power button when towing, I also shift manually on hills. The last time I went to Sydney I upped my speed a bit and I did notice a slight improvement. I'll be doing that in future. I didn't mention that up to now I have only towed between Canberra and Goulburn and also Canberra and Sydney. Both runs are full of hills. I know that isn't helping. Thanks for the comments.

Last run I did was on the same roads - Sydney>Marulan & back, towing a VH on a car trailer.
16L/100km, but I was sitting around 80-90km/h for most of it, as it was an unfamiliar trailer I'd borrowed.
