I would guess at mid 60s.......

Greetings, The tar top batteries were replaced by the plastic cased variety mid 1970 sometime. HGs had plastic cased batteries from the factory but it would have been normal for the first replacement to have been an old tar top type depending on who/when it was changed. By HQ they were using the ones with the glass marbles in them to check the water level.
look out, the guru is coming through...

As far as I know the raised lettering was replaced by the smooth finish batteries in the last few years.
Can anyone else confirm this?

Nick.

Just an update on the battery on EBAY below is a link to it now...it did not sell so the owner re priced it from $575.00 buy it now. to $900.00 buy it now. Well planned so far as re positioning tactics go. Put it up firstly, then maybe start dropping it to see where the market is.

Really though, if you can't sell it for $575 maybe it would sell for $400????? I think what makes something like a battery hard to sell on Ebay is its weight.

Cheers. Nick.

OK. So I did end up getting the Ebay battery mentioned. But not through Ebay. It did sell and ended up in WA. A GTHO Phase three owner got it. Through a number of flukes I was able to work out who it was and it turned out I knew him through my association with the Falcon GT fraternity. He was preparing his HO For the GT Nationals and was going to "convert" the battery to "Autolite" branding. After several calls I persuaded him it belonged in a Holden so he relented and it is now put in my car when displayed. Cost a bomb but a rare item not often seen.

The old one went to Pope batteries and stayed there for some months as Russel got ill. I ended up giong there and getting it back in pieces.

So I have a question.

Is Ariel batteries still doing batteries in Melbourne?

Cheers Nick.
