From a someone who's done 5 trips to the USA. My tips.
1) Make sure you've got travel insurance.
2) If you're planning to drive, buy a GPS over there. My Tomtom was
$120 at Walmart. Worth it.
3) US Highways are amazing. You can safely cruise on 120K's ( check local speed limits- some intersates in Texas are 80 MPH max- others less)
4) Driving on highways is easy. It's in the towns & cities you've got to watch it. My mantra is " tight turns right, left turns loose"
also known as 'hug the right, feel the right, be the right"
Can be a bit of a mind****, esp the first minute behind the wheel every day.
5) What to see? Only you know your interests. Vegas- cheap rooms- the mug gamblers subside the rooms. Grand Canyon. If you're remotely interested in aircraft, Tucson is the go, Pima Air Museum & Davis Montham AFB. San Franciso is a great city- more user friendly than LA.
Wrecking yards- google is your friend there. I usually stay at
povo pack motels like Super 8 & Motel6. Also try America's Best Value Inns. Nothing flash, but I've always had a good sleep there.
6) Buy a small esky. Most cheap motels have an ice machine. Great for a cold drink while on the move. And the odd bottle of Millers/Corrona, etc once the driving is done.
7) Don't drink & drive. Most states are .08. But remember you're on their side of the road. So don't risk it.
8)Maybe have a google on upcomming car shows, you're bound to find
something. Have look at local motor sports- you you'll find a speedway or drags on weekends in most places.
9) The Yanks generally love Aussies. They're a friendly mob. Even if they can't understand cricket. And don't bother mentioning GAYfl.
The ones I've met take it very seriously that we've stood beside them in most wars since 1900. They're very proud of their military.
10) Try joining a USA based online forum. I met some fellow Buick owners in Tucson. Told them I wasn't after free acomadation, just a chance to meet for a yarn. Result. I now have Tucson based mates.
If in Indiana- do the speedway Hall of fame Museum. In Dayton Ohio.
the USAF Museum is a must.
In LA
http://www.crevierclassiccars.com/http://www.crevierclassiccars.com/ is well worth it. Like a museum, but free. But if you have to ask the prices...........
Bottom line is. What ever you're interested in the USA will have it.
In bigger quanties than we have here.
End of rant!
