o you reach a point where you loose interest in cars or the enthusiasm wanes..... I'm not sure if its just old age or the fact that the car industry its self has changed. I have 2 daughters that are driving now one has a VT the other a VH, one wants the newest the other the oldest commodore they can get and I find my self more interested in the old VH than the newer VT. With the advent of electronics into cars and more and more gismo's and harder and harder regulations I have lost interest. I don't know if its because you cant just stick it in the shed and work on it anymore with out computerized specialist equipment! Or it may be the fact that its such a throw away society now you simply replace it and not rebuild it....... Then you have the fact that both Ford and Holden as we know it are coming to an end, what a bleak future when all we have are Asian cars, that LOOK ASIAN ! LOL Then we have the future of electric cars and all the young lads will be sitting around comparing their "Photoelectric cells" to see who has the biggest or the fastest!

Boy I miss the good old days and Im not even 50 yet !! But I just cant afford $1,200 a year to register a V8 or over $100 to fill the tank. I miss the real Bathurst battles with real cars, not these new trans axle things where you "stitch" the body on.

Ow well my third daughter wants a mini truck, how the hell do you shrink a Mack? LOL, and the boys only 6 god knows what he will be driving even though he loves Chevy V8's !!

Well thats my little rant, I started on cars when I was 5 with my old man and been at it it ever since even when I swear "thats it no more". Just wondering how you guys feel about it ?

Some of you work in the industry, other write about it, while others just do it for a hobby, but how do you feel ? Cheers Barry

I'm in a similar position Barry, 50 is closing in fast and I like older cars generally.
Yet the new vehicles can do so much more, with so much more ease. Yes, there is so much of the throw-away mentality about it, but then they go, stop and handle better than the oldies do (standard, at least). They also don't rust as easily, which is the killer for me with old cars, my WB included.
It is also a matter of what you are used to, or what you can afford to become used to. If you drove a new HSV every day, you might even like it...
I used my WB as a family hauler on a few holidays and as an occasional daily driver. Now it's unregoed in the shed, and I have a 99 WH GenIII as my daily driver while the WB gets a make-over. They are so incredibly differnt, even though they are at similar mileages and both are old cars. 17 years of technology and the WH is just such an easy car to drive compared to the WB, even though I love the WB.

You can't have it all either. I want the old days, no EFI, plenty of good swap meets, no traffic and no idiots on mobiles while driving, but then I want access to forums like this 24/7, online ads so I can buy what I want from the other side of the world, etc.

The future is looking bleak, you're right, but I get the feeling you and I will both be pushing up daisies before that happens in earnest. We still have plenty of time to enjoy our cars, though I think it will get more and more expensive to do so.

I have thought the same thing, Throw it in and get some thing up to date and not worry about it.
The thing is you don't say lets take out the late model wagon for a Sunday drive, you do that during the week,it is more fun with a classic,At the moment i have as a daily driver a HJ six seater 6 wagon which is pritty clean, and the looks that i get from other blokes that are in the up to date cars ,they slow down to get a closer look.
My ride is not the bees nees or anything just clean and straight, the look on there faces are of, i wish i had that or somthing like it, may it be a holden or dare i say it ford lol,
But i have decided to say stuff it all and be happy enjoy it because you are only here once and it is great to just drive them the feeling is like no other, because if you decide to get out it,it will be much harder to get back in,
well that's my thought about it
Happiness is not a destination but a way of life (so drive a kingswood)

I am not even as old as you guys... but the towel has been thrown in. Sold all the HK's and huge stockpile of parts. With the cash I bought a rental property, A HSV Coupe4 and a CV8, and could not be happier, no more dicking around getting parts that are crap and need to be rebuilt. They just sit in the shed waiting for me to drive them.

Getting married and having 2 kids certainly changed the way I thought about things. I said I would never sell the HK's, but they are certianly not family friendly. Where I can put a baby seat in the back of the new ones and cruise in air conditioned comfort, while the kids sleep. Cant do that in a HK.

I do miss the old girls at times, but I certainly do not regret making the move at all.

Interesting conversation.

Im 42 so dont have quite as many ks on the clock as you but i know what you mean. I have fond memories of mates with their old holdens and a mate who had a lime green SLR 5000 that we would cut laps up and down the main street in, do donuts on the lawns and sometimes drive up and down the footpaths in with the lights turned off.. yeah stupid stuff i lknow but it was a different era.

Where once everyone had an old holden/ford/valiant in their driveway with the bonnet up, now its jap crap with blue lights underneath... The torana is no longer the hoon car, its now the balding 50 year olds weekender and cops only pull you over to have a look at it.

Anyway, you can lose interest, but that also comes with age, as lying on a cold concrete floor, swearing at a rusted bolt and taking layers of skin off your knuckles becomes less fun. Not to mention the attraction of a car which starts on cold mornings, has working heaters and demisters and doesnt overheat or have linkages which seize at the lights... Old cars can suck arse, but the solution i found is to have both. we have a reliable family car cos we have 2 kids, but I also have my toys. A blokes gotta have a shed to play in and a car project is a great thing to have. My daughter couldnt care less about old cars, but Im hoping my boy will when he gets older. For that reason Im hangin in there.

Ive also converted my VH to EFI so it runs beautifully. I get a real kick out of the old school V8 sound and performanc in an old car, but it is also really reliable and powerful. I have my HZ sandman which lets be honest, is a pig of a thing to drive really, with no side vision and a clutch that requires weightlifters legs. But its only a weekend car now. I used to always have panel vans and swore id never get a boring car. But when you have kids you have to make a few compromises! Just as long as you can hang onto some toys, you can still do the family stuff. Its cool that your girls are into cars at all and that one of them goes for the early commodore look! Mine just complains about the petrol smell!

Its not so much that you lose interest, more just that the priorities change. If you get a sandman at least they are useful and you look cool camping or going to the drive-in! Im also doing up a torana. Its just a fun project to chip away at but i dont hold any hopes that times ever gunna go backwards and everyone will be hooning around old school again. Its just a slow project that keeps my brain occasionally occupied. I agree though, that its probably going to get more expensive as time moves on, but the amount of looks and conversations that the sandman generates when i take it out, make it all worthwhile!

Anyhoo thats my rant.....

I'm lucky (and worked hard enough) to be able to have a choice.
Daily driver is a VZ Commy, weekend toy is a Buick.

On a long trip, the Commy wins hands down. AC, ABS, buckets, cloth,
cruise, etc. The same power from an engine 2 litres smaller.
Much less regular servicing needed too. It's quieter- much less wind noise.

In comparison. the Buick is an evil handling, with slow, yet diabolicaly light steering, underdamped & underbraked pig to drive.

It takes more of an effort to drive with its 4 wheel drums, and LHD. You have to be more aware and make more allowance for ****heads.
I find my driving is more relaxed in it- even when used of a run to the shops.

And for all that, I love driving it. Puts a smile on my face every time. And is'nt that why we go though all the work, cursing, and
$$$ for.

That's my rant for the day !

Cheers,

Yeah, I think hainzy has nailed it, your priorities change over time. When you have a family you don't have time to fiddle with old cars (like when you were young & single) & you need a modern, safe, comfortable car for day to day transport.

The other thing I've learnt is that you shouldn't try to use an older car as your only form of transport. It's like trying to race your everyday car, something breaks & you have no transport.

When you get older, you could have enough money & time to have both; a modern everyday car & an older 'toy' for fun & pleasure. Take a leaf out of the hot-rodder's book & make motoring fun.

Maybe when the weather warms up and the sun is out longer ....

i agree with the doc , at 45 , i have chrysler 300c as a daily driver comfortable , powerful , and all the mod cons and love it, and considering u can pick one up for around the 20-25k mark these days is awesome value ,

and by not using my hobby car each day you seem to enjoy them more , which is why the v8 eh is of the road at as we speak , removing the manual valve body auto , removing the 4.11 rear , and all the chunky cam and engine bits , to change her over to a super smooth roller cam 350 / t350 / 3.25 9""
so she become as super smooth cruiser that can be a joy to drive all day long if you wish

C'on, Cloudy, get the Ponty out for a run! Once you're behind the wheel, you'll remember why we go through all the agro.

As westoz says, the ideal solution is for a modern car for the chores, and keep the hobby one for the fun.

I try to take the Buick out at least once a week- even if it's just a beer or grocery run. Makes a trip to the shops almost enjoyable,
and a trip to the pub is enjoyable even on a pushie!

And if you've got the time & budjet, there's a few classics with modern running gear underneath.

Cheers,

the other option expanding on docs comment , take a leaf out of the hot rodders book ,

street rod guys add all the mod cons into rods these days ( as have added into mine )
makes them much more easy to use

simple things , air con , power steer , elec windows , central locking , cruise control ,4 wheel discs ,remote boot release ,

so many of these things can come in kit form and are easy added bit by bit as time and money allows

a full mod cons early holden is just as much fun to drive as a stocky if not more

i love my EH,s but when you boil it down to what you really love , for me i love the clunk when i close a door , real steel , i love the interior EG dash board and gauges , all these things are not affected by updating to a few mod cons

end of rant , lol lol

LOL loven every post on this, it seems that age and children (no to mention the missus) seem to take its toll on all of us ! Im just glad to see Im not the only one that has his ups and downs, all though I must admit I find some of the comments interesting.

My family car (thats the wife drives) is a Nissan Patrol so there is no ride comfort there (and I drive buses and trucks lol) which is one of the reasons I suppose I sill enjoy the feel of the older cars, I love the rattle and shake of a lumpy cam, I love the way the ass want to cut loose, I would rather drive with the window down and hear the car than fall to sleep with the air-con on, being over six foot I tend to bang my head on the door jam of newer cars, they seem harder to get in and out of and lower to the ground! LMAO

But I must admit I hate the rust problems on the older car and I threw an entire WH stato interior into the daughters VT in less than a day ! Body kits are simple to fit and common lol, but I do miss the old deep dish mags, I still think they looked tougher than these 18" to 22" rims !

Im currently with out a car or a toy for that matter but I make the sacrifice for the family and the house as we do, but Im still looking ;-) I spent a lot of time on the speedway tracks and in the street machine scene (thats when street machines where street driven !) So my girls have picked up the bug and my boy was born on the race track 6 years ago and his constantly on the ride on or his quad. I still have a garage full of tools that I protect from the boy friends when they come around !! and Im very lucky in the fact that the missus enjoys working on the cars as well and was also competitive in speedway racing and burnout comps.

As I said the the wife I would like to build one more slick streeter, hit a few shows and do some cruising, but I will have to get rid of the girls first they are very expensive !!!

well thats added to my rant !! Cheers Barry

Wow so much negativity.

I am 54. Keep fit and active. Work hard. Earn less money than I did before the GFC. ....and I love the way things are.

I have the same passion I had when I was 16 years old and look forward to taking it with me all the way!

Enthusiasm does take a little drive and discipline but once it is re-engaged it builds its own head of steam.

Whether it's an HB Torana or a Glamour GTS most of us really like that special car in our shed.

I like my new daily drivers as much as my oldies. Cars are just great.

I know that times change but any of you who went to the Sydney all Holden day last Sunday would agree with me that there is still intense interest in cars generally. Thousands and thousands of Sydneysiders enjoyed a loveley sunny winter's day looking at some of GM-H's finest.

It's a great hobby.

Cheers.

Good topic. I still love my old cars (even though the hq hasn't seen the road in 5 years)but my interest has dropped off a little. I think its partly due to juggling work, family, time away, socialising (trying to keep the mrs happy)etc, I just don't have as much time to enjoy my cars as I used to. My 350 tonner hardly gets used now , except when I need to tow or pick up a large load, my road bike gets ridden once a month if I'ts lucky. I have a VY exec that I bought cheap a couple of years ago, and it gets gets used the most out of the lot, easier to throw the shopping in, go away on weekends in it & it handles , stops and goes well, doesn't overheat in traffic & is easy to drive. But its boring.......only reason i bought it was because its got the mod cons. I'd love an old cruiser with all the modern gear in it, but I'd worry like hell when I parked it at the shops, or movies etc, where as I can park the vy & not worry about it. Like one of the other guys said, its going to get more expensive to drive an older car, rego, fuel, & the prices some people want for rusted out wrecks or parts that need to be rebuilt anyway. I'll always have an old car, it just won't get used much...............Cheers.

I still own the same car that I drove as a P-plater 22 years ago, a HQ GTS, and I bought another HQ GTS a couple of years ago.

I've recently been converting an old video of me and mates cruising around (hooning) in our cars and its cool to see that my car still looks exactly the same as it did back then, yet sooooo many things have changed with us and the world over those 22 years. Its good to have something constant in our lives and for me its my HQ. One of us is a grandparent FFS!

My current daily is a Nissan R35 GT-R and I'm completely in love with it, however!! . . if my garage was burining down I'd rescue my two HQ's first and then I'd get the GT-R if it wasnt on fire by then.

I freekin love driving the HQ's as often as possable and I'll never get tired of it, I feel like I'm 19 again when I drive them so for me the answer is no I dont 'lose interest' in my/our history. My family and my friends and their kids wouldnt let me sell it now anyway, its like a time capsule.

^^^^ agree with that, specially when you don't have a garage or carport and have to do it all outside. Not real fun when you are getting a bit older and the hands don't want to function, the muscles ache and the joints creak etc, lol. Far better to spend the winter indoors planning the summers activities whilst cleansing the inner self.

I find my enthusiasm can run in tandem with the cooks attitude re the spending etc, sometimes I have had enough of the dramas and just let it slide for a while.

I don't think the interest ever wanes. I'm now 53 and probably more active than ever.

When our kids were born I got rid of everything thinking I wouldn't go back. Now theyve left I find my interest just gets bigger. My wife has her stuff and I have my cars.

I now have a nice big garage and plenty of room to move. A stock FJ, a warm FE, an FE wagon in bits and my EH racer. If I'm not working around the yard or doing stuff with the missus I'll be in my shed doing something.

The best thing I ever did was go racing. What an absolute blast. To build a car and race it is awesome. I've just finished installing a new motor in the EH and plan on going to Muscle Car Masters in September. I now couldn't imagine not having the cars.

I hope I never lose interest.

Hey Silerfox et al,

I'll be moving up Yamba way in the middle of October and I'll be driving my HK GTS up. That'll be my daily driver for a long time as I need to look for work before the rest of the family come up at the end of the year.
It is my car that I use whenever I need to (I'm lucky in that I catch a train/tram to work now), generally 2-3 days a week. I put the mower and tools in it when I do my weekend gardening cashies and I have only ever owned 1968-70 holdens and one 1968 mazda so that is all I know. In saying that the misses has a VE wagon but that's hers so I use the monaro for weekend work and anything else (picking kids up from school etc).
You are all right in that its bloody hard to get motivated in the Melbourne winter to get out in the shed, but for me thats what I have to drive (and my HK Pano but it's a beasty that gets about 180k's to the tank) so that's it, you have to do it. Funnily enough I still get a hard time from some dudes about driving as a daily type car but #$%^'em.
And I still get a woodie everytime I drive her to and the pano, I love it.
Cheers all
Al
