G'day all,
I'm after a bit of advice here, my wife's EF Falcon (4.0L) has a cracked head. It started running rough on her yesterday so she limped it home, and when I checked it,it had all the symptoms of a blown head gasket (blowing steam, coolant dripping from the tailpipe and white sludge in the oil. So today I pulled off the head, and found that it had blown between the water jacket and No. 3 cylinder. Then on further inspection ZI found the head was cracked where the gasket had blown (I suspect this is from continuing to drive it home with a blown gasket) So what I need to know is, what is themost cost effective way to get the car back on the road? Is it better to just buy a complete running engine from a wrecker and swap the head over or just buy a reco head? And can the cracked head be repaired or is it f***ed? I dont have a lot of money, so need the most economical way to do it. The car is otherwise immaculate, always garaged and regularly serviced so she wants to keep it if possible, because we cant afford to trade it in at the moment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How many Ks on the motor? If the motor was good, not using oil etc I'd look at buying a recoed head and putting that on. Get some prices and see how you go. I'd steer clear of trying to repair the existing head.

They often crack between exhaust valves and water jackets. My brothers EB cracked there on 5 cylinders.

I have an EB head with no visible cracks that you can have for $40 plus whatever eGo charges you for freight. I believe that all 4 litre engines are much the same heads except for Tickford & non Tickford.

I'm just outside of Canberra so Ego depot to depot won't be overly expensive.

I'll see if I can box it up tomorrow so we know how big & heavy it is.

Also be aware that you will have to get yourself new head bolts too as they are NOT re usable unless you want snapped head bolts causing the engine to hydraulically destroy itself when a cylinder rapidly fills with coolant.

Thanks Jim that would be great, let me know the final cost and I'll do a bank deposit. Can you do me a favour and run a straight edge over it to see if it is warped? Thanks.

I have just cut down a suitable box and what I'm going to end up with is 34 KG 77 X 23 X 27.

Ego has two depots in Sydney one in Villawood and one in Taren point both will cost $44.64 if you pick up from their depot.

To help with the freight lets make the head $30.

I can and will reccomend that I remove the camshaft for two reasons. Firstly it will knock a couple of KG off the weight & freight cost and secondly as it's holding valves open they could possibly arrive bent if the package gets handled roughly.

You will need new valve stem seals in this head as my street is 800metres to the bottom and it's all downhill so at the bottom on cold mornings I used to leave a bit of a smoke cloud when I took off at the botom of my street. This only used to happenon sub zero mornings I presume when the seals were cold and hard.
