I've got an efi engine from a VN commodore in a WB Caprice. I've changed the water temp sender in the engine to a WB one so that the gauge reads cxorrectly. However the oil pressure sender is a duifferent matter. The efi engine oil pressure sender has three wires: red, purple & dk blue. How can I wire this up to the WB gauge without putting a T piece in and running both efi & WB senders? I thought that connecting the red & purple wires together, and the dk Blue wire to the pressure switch might work, but am I right. Anyone had this issue before? |

Hey Bruce, good to hear from you again mate. The VN Oil sender is only a switch - it can only work a light. If you want to run a gauge, you'll need to use a variable sender suitable for the gauge.
Red = 12V from the battery (via a fusible link & fuel pump fuse) Purple = output to the fuel pump (paired onto the fuel pump relay terminal) Blue = output to the oil light on the dash.
Don't join the red & purple or the fuel pump will simply keep running until it flattens the battery.
A T-piece is the best (but not neatest) way to 'plug & play' with no wiring mods.
You can remove the oil pressure switch from the circuit, and rely on the EFI computer to trigger the fuel pump relay & maintain that connection (the oil pressure switch is a backup circuit to the fuel pump). |

If the engine is from a VN the orange and violet wires are a backup for the fuel pump relay and the dark blue wire is for the oil pressure warning light.
The fuel pump backup feeds power to the fuel pump once the engine has oil pressure, this is used as a backup if the fuel pump relay fails.
On my conversion I just removed the VN sender and used my WB sender

Just get a brass manifold vacuum T-piece off an old red 6. The one where the brake vacuum hose goes. This screws into the oil pump and the 2 x senders either side. |

So.....if I want to run only the WB sender without a Tee piece,I connect the blue wire up to the WB sender as you would normally, but what do I do with the red and purple wires that are left?
If I put in a Tee piece (which I'd prefer not to), then I assume I just remove the blue wire from the VN type sender, and connect it to the WB sender on the Tee?
....just need to be crystal clear before I do something stupid and stuff the computer :-(
I've got a couple of other wiring queries in this build (HQ with WB series II Caprice dash & VR HSV GTS stroker engine & T56 box), but I'll clear up the oil pressure issue before posting other queries. Cheers Chaps. |

I prefer to use the T-piece, I've done several of these conversions.
It really depends if you want to have an oil pressure warning light operating on the dash, or not.
If you don't need or want to have the warning light, just fit the WB gauge sender & forget the EFI switch & rely on the relay & ECU to operate the fuel pump.

Thanks everyone.....seems the Tee piece is the best option. Thanks Byron for the red 6 manifold T idea.....I have one kicking around I can use.
The Caprice dash has a combination idiot light and gauge on a printed circuit board, so if you have one, you have the other! |

Bought a Tee piece, removed blue wire from EFI loom & connected to WB sender unit. Installed EFI sender with the red & purple wires connected.......SWEET! Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
PS: Bought the Tee adapter from Enzed....Rarespares, auto barn, supercheap etc didn't have in stock. Sometimes it pays to think outside the square. |
