I fitted 4 GTS style rare spares hubcaps on the HG about a year ago and have just discovered the hard way, a very dangerous fault with them. The outer part of the cap is able to move slowly around the wheel over time, without the inner part of the cap cutting the valve in half. A rarespares hubcap cut into my valve on left front wheel yesterday and I lost all the air in the tube instanly. Not good when your sitting on a 100ks on a freeway. Nearly pooped myself. Anyone else aware of this issue. |

Yep, I'm pretty sure Rares have been told about this problem. I have also reported the sharp edges to them in a previous post. I've glued the inner to the outer so that they don't move. Have also put some pinchweld on the edges around the valve stem. If they do move again, only the pinchweld will rub on the valve.

^^^^ As above, go to Clark Rubber they have lot's of seal profiles which might be smaller than pinchweld.

Surely you would think if Rarespares know of the problem they would recall and stop selling them. I find it amazing that they could leave themselves open to a lawsuit when someone is killed or injured by ignoring the problem. Absolute madness the risk these hubcaps pose. |

Hi. They a good looking copy and I am sure Rares invested heaps creating them. I brought the the stem cutting issue up with a rep for RS at the NSW Holden Day and was told that the issue "has been addressed". I heard on the old grapevine that the wife of an owner had a mishap in Victoria some time ago and this was the first issue brought to RS attention. Rares are usually good with issues like this. It would be nice to see a response from Les on this. To be fair I would understand Les' position if there is a mute response. Nevertheless it would be good to know where Rares are with this. Some Monaros are insured for more than $100K. Limited liability or not I am sure an insurer would do more than just write a cheque if there was a mnajor claim. Cheers Nick

Hello Silverfox I can understand what you say and its good the issue has been adressed, BUT my name and adress and what I have purchased I believe would be on the Rarespares computer system as they have to contact me when parts I have ordered come in. This happened with the hubcaps. My question to Rares then would be this. Why didn't you contact me regarding the danger with these Repro GTS hubcaps? I would assume you have a lot of other people in your system who you aware have these potentially lethal hubcaps on their car. |

BIGCAV I am unsure who you are or if you are employed by Rare Spares but you appear to have some knowledge of the problem (the problem was amended - what does this mean? - and they were removed from sale). Mate if there is a problem with a faulty product that has safety implications have a recall of ALL hubcaps and refund all the money. Simple. It is not good enough to say we will have to wait for Les to come back. Is he the only one who can make a decision? If you are aware there is / was a problem and haven't taken steps to prevent damage / injury I would not like to be a director of Rare Spares in a court case. It is called negligence. Who is going to compensate HGV8 for the costs or repairing / replacing tyres? |

i am an EX employee of Rare Spares, now i just look after the forums, as i mentioned in my last sentance all your other questions will be answered by les (or another current staff member) as soon as they have read this thread and are aware someone has had an issue.
im just trying to say please dont jump to conclusions like it appears you may have thinking nothing has been done in the way of a recall etc, im sure a response from rares will be available as soon as they realise this thread is available.
i would suggest if HGV8 is in need of a quicker answer that he call Rare Spares on 03 9305 4000, as an EX employee i beleive i can say without bias and from prior experiances that they will be quite helpful

No not jumping to conclusions but from reading a number of posts here it appears more than 1 person has had a problem with the hubcaps and for the life of me I can't understand why someone would sell a faulty product after becoming aware of same. It would appear from some responses here RSP are / were already aware of issues but they were sold after being made aware. If thatnis the case it beggars the question why? And yes I have had problems with a RSP panel and Dave Ryan at RSP was helpful. |

just to be clear and i had to reread the thread and everyones post you mentioned to get the dates correct but the suspect trims were purchased "about year ago", as soon as the problem was found no more were sold. no where in this thread according to any post can one conclude rares kept selling a faulty product so im not sure why you beleive they did, a few people mention they know or have had the problem but that in no way means that they were purchased when the problem was known to rares

I know of people who have purchased these within the past 12 months. Unsure if they are ones which have had the problem rectified (if in fact it has been rectified). I would like to know if RSP had a product safety recall when they became aware of the problem? Did they contact people who had purchased them and advise them of the fault? |

Hi J.Williams, I apologise for the bad experience you have had with the hubcaps you purchased from Rare Spares. We did have one batch of the hubcaps arrive which had the problem you have described, not all hubcaps had this issue. I can assure you as soon as we were made aware of the issue we removed them from sale, and did an internal recall to our Distributor network thinking we would have captured most of the problem caps. Unfortunately some of the faulty caps did get out and I do genuinely apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. I would like to offer you a full replacement set of Hub Caps as well as any out of pocket expenses you have incurred due to the faulty Hub Caps you received. Can you please contact me on mobile:0419330941 or via Email: [email protected]Regards, Lance Corby |

To be fair how would Rares chase up someone who paid cash?
Obviously this is a very serious issue and Rares need to get a handle on this real quick.
To be curious, why wasn't a national recall for inspection or instructions published on what to look for on the items in question?
We are an understanding lot and I think we would rather have the heads up and hassle rather than experience what J. Williams experienced.
I would also reckon that we as enthusiasts would want Rares to prosper, so it's not too late to get the info out there.

Most white goods and food are all sold as cash sales. You often see recall adds in papers warning people to return these goods to the point of sale. I assume that Rare Spares are obligated to do this when they have a dangerous/faulty goods on the shelves. There was a recall add put out to customers in papers right?

I would think that HGV8 would appreciate Lance's offer, but what about a response to the other questions ( ie. safety recall etc)? Don't RSP own / sponsor this site? How hard would it have been to post here that there was a problem with the hubcaps. I couldn't agree more with WB ute's comments. 69 rust bucket I know of a bloke who has spent over $20k with RSP on his HK Monaro restoration and they have his details on file but I bet they haven't checked to see if his hubcaps are faulty. To me it comes down to customer service and making sure you look after your brand. If the main talking point for RSP products is people's bad experiences that does not do your business any good. |
