Good question as I am about to do the same to my car, although it was my understanding that they were installed when hot. I was going to just use high tensile bolts and weld the nut on.

could they be machined from from a blank,then heated and hammered down?
old rivets used in bridges and ships from memory were cast iron, heated cherry red then hammered with an air hammer with a die tool, of course the back had to be held in place.

Cant you just buy them? They are still used to hold knife sections farm machinery. You might get lucky if you try John Deere or New Holland etc.

G'day darren,i've just replaced my boot floor in my monaro with rivots that are almost identical to factory ones,heads are slightly larger.they took me ages to find.i can find out in the next few days if i can get more.i had to heat the rivots and then hit the head while a mate held a dolly from behind.As the rivot cooled down it compressed everything tightly and they came up a treat,Lou.
