Hi, I am trying to find a rebuild kit for a 149hp motor. I am hearing pistons etc are not made for these any more...? Any ideas?

149 piston & rings haven't been around forever, but I think that if the block wasn't too badly corroded, it could be bored to 161 or even 161 +30 perhaps.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

You can buy bearings, but no pistons seem to be available. You might have to consider finding compatible 4cyl pistons and use them, or sleeve it to 173 bore size and use 173 pistons. About Time Spares has a set of 173 +0.060 pistons in stock. There may be NOS 149 ones out there. Or look around for rebuilt 149's with oversize pistons and use them.

149 is 3.25" bore (82.55mm), 1.78" comp height (45.212mm) and 0.866" pin (22mm).

The only ones I could see that you might be able to use are:

170/198/225ci Valiant slant 6 pistons.
These have 3.40" bore (so 175 thou over), 1.74" comp height and 0.901" pin
So you'd have to deck the block 1mm and bore the rod little ends out by 35 thou.

Also possibly 1593cc Ford Capri, 1600GT Cortina or Sierra piston.
These are 3.4507" bore (so 200 thou over), 41.1mm compression height and 24,01mm pin. With these you'd have to use a 202 crank with turned down mains and deck the block about 1.5mm, and bore the little ends out 2mm.

I'd be trying to find good original standard bore 161 pistons first though, and just getting new rings. These are only 125 thou oversize for a 149.

HOLD THE FORT. Just found these that might do the job.

Flathead Ford V8. These are 3.268" diameter as an 80 thou over piston (so 3.188" as STD), this is only 18 thou over on the 149 though so your bore would want to be good. 1.763" comp height and 0.750" pin so you'd have to machine the piston pin out, but they are press fit so just use Holden pins or alternatively get some sleeves fitted to the Holden rods.

I just found them in 100 thou over, so 38 thou over 149:

thanks guys! I have a friend willing to sell me a 179hp block. That might be the way to go! If I have to bore stuff and spend the money, im probably best to spend the money on the 179.

You might have the same problem, ie finding 179 pistons. The only real choice I think is to bore to +62.5 thou and use either 186 pistons with the 179 crank or use 202 pistons with a modified 202 crank.

I have a 149 in my FB Holden. It's bored out to 167 using 40 thou oversize 161 pistons. It was already done when I bought the motor and I have clocked up approx 15 000 miles since fitting it with no problems.
Holden, the great way to move.
