Steve Jackson, owner of original FB & EK Holdens, is now forced to sell his collection of 10 cars,

"The administrator, Jamieson Louttit & Associates, said Mr Jackson had signed an enforceable undertaking pledging to sell his collection of 10 vintage cars as partial repayment of the debt owed to creditors"

Its tough times at the moment. I hate to see a collection sold, I hope he recovers.

Is that Gold EK of his a confirmed Premier prototype or is it some sort of dealer special?

It's neither actually.

It was an EK built in-house especially for the then General Manager, Harlow Gage. Steve has the paperwork to show that GMH-000 was its original rego number back then. It was built in mid-1961, early in the EK run, so this would make it too early to be a prototype for the next model series. It was more of a show car, built for a VIP, rather than a true prototype, although some of the bits did end up in EJ Premiers in 1962. The body ID plate also has unique codes on it.

What makes it unique are the many 'special' items or trim colours for an EK. For example it has factory power steering & fold-down centre armrests front & rear. The seats, door trims & headlining are in unique colours & cloth materials, while both exterior & interior are all in one-off metallic paints. It has lots or 'Premier-like' inclusions such as carpet, 4 x door armrests, white steering wheel, heater/demister etc. etc.

Yes that makes total sense Dr Terry.
Still, will be sorry not to see the big Yellow EK van sign at Annandale anymore. It was a bit of a landmark especially for Holden fans.

That's a interesting point or two made by Dr Terry. I wonder if this car was built here in Australia or was sent to the US and a makeover done on it just like was the case with the Bill Bourke special GT Falcon. It is documented that the special HQ Monaros were all done here but this EK was a decade earlier when GMH didn't have the facilities like they had in 1971.

I'm pretty sure it was built here D.A. GM-H had huge resources at their disposal back then, a lot more than other local manufacturers, even in the 50s.

From FE onwards, new cars were designed & built here from the ground up, prototyped, tested at Lang Lang & put into production. By comparison, a tarted up EK would have been child's play.

I saw some of these vehicles going up to auction being covered I think on the ABC. TV show collectors. They seemed really cheap in general. Some sold others got close to reserve.
