I would say if it is after 1970 vehicle then you would have no chance of registration without the ADR Compliance plate.
Earlier cars dont have a compliance plate, and are not expected to have them, and the Body build plate has no chassis number so is not important.

For example an EH Holden only has to have the actual stamped in metal chassis number from factory (or Police allocated number)

I reckon they only made the Holden ute in Aus, so no prob identifying wher it was made and to what ADR'S. Rego'd an 84 Calais last year with only the thin ID tag, had no problems what so ever. I did do a check on chassis and engine no. before purchase and also called Vic roads... Hope this helps Toby |

No problems in NSW. Car only needs a chassis number. WIth a ute you might have to have a visible GVM though. |

Chassis & engine numbers are all you need. You will need proof of ownership, then either RTA or Police will need to site the numbers and receipts. This was NSW and a few years ago. Was a WB ute. GVM would only be an issue if you were registering as a commercial. |
