hey i am wondering how much work is involved in getting a statutory write off back rego'd and on the road? i am looking at one that has "water damage", doesnt say what it is though, how much would i be looking at to get her back o the road? cheers

MAte a few years ago I purchased a hail damaged Mazda Bravo as a statutory right off (the only reason it was written off was the cost of repair was greater then the value of the car). I had to get a plate fitted to the car from an engineer stating the car was OK (can't remember exactly what was on the plate but basically saying OK for a RWC and registration). Certification cost about $400 5/6 years ago. I am in QLD. No big problem getting it done just a bit of mucking around.

water wrecks everything, even crap you cant see (like switch terminals, pins on looms etc)

If it had a driveline that was suitable for a donor and the panels were worth money and the car was cheap enough id consider it, but a flood car with the aim of keeping it for a driver, no bloody way.

Totally agree. I know a few people who bought VX/VY era commodores real cheap out of the Newcastle auctions that were flood damaged. It's easy enough to change out carpets & trims, and hose the silt out of the doors & chassis rails, but there's a lot more to consider when "water damage" is the reason for the write off.
All 3 of those cars were fine for a while, but all of them eventually developed electrical gremlins over time. Only cure was an entire vehicle loom swap - that was on the VY. The other 2 had hundreds of $$ spent at auto sparkys chasing weird fault codes before the owners gave up & sold them.

Water gets in everywhere, and the corrosion it causes down the track is what kills things. In a moden car, the looms are very extensive (and expensive) - replacement requires an almost total strip-down. And then there's the myriad of electronic modules & computers that also don't like water.

^^Agree. I do know some people that got absolute bargains though as they knew the cars and knew what happened to them eg water only up to the floor level. However most of the cars were parked out in the sun for weeks on Kooragang Island, most had windows up. So you can imagine the sweating and corrosion that happened to electrical connections in that time.

Hi all. Hope everyone had a good and safe christmas. AFAIK statutory write off can't be re-registed (no exception) however repairable write off can.It could very between states and i could be totally wrong as seems to be happening more the older i get. maybe google it. Have a great new year's eve. Dave

Statutory write off cannot be re-registered. The information is there. Vic

Sorry my mistake. Mine was a repairable write off NOT statutory write off.
