Apparently a 350 Holley is perfect for a 302 so it should not be too bad on a 289.

However the dyno tune shop that told me that and tuned the 350 Holley to my 179 did a brilliant job of making the car really drivable but I lost a lot of top end grunt with the 350 that I had before with the previous 600 Holley because the engine was worked and balanced to rev easily to 7000rpm.

Mild cam you might get away with a 500 Holley or a step up to a 4 barrel manifold and a 600 Vac Sec Holley or even a Quadrajet from a 308 as they are a brilliant carby IMHO.

I have a fairly stock 302 in my XM coupe with 350 Holley, anything over that is excessive if you are just wanting to cruise and have decent fuel economy.
