going to tassie next month for the boatie festival going to buy a car and drive up to canberra and queensland.
what are the regs for car transfers in tassie, do they have to be inspected or is it just a straight transfer? seen some nice cars but will have to a registered one as I won't have time or inclination to do repairs.

Crikey, don't tell too many people about this because the pollies in Tassie might wake up to the fact that they can get their grubby fingers deep into the motorists wallet in the name of road safety.

wa has the same setup, they maintain there is no evidence inspections make for better road safety when statistics from the various states are compared. in other words annual inspections are not worth the effort and cost and from what I have seen I cannot remember when a serious accident was put down to mechanical failure. most drivers of old bombs know their car is a dud and drive accordingly, same as drivers of well done rods never get into strife they cherish their car.
I would be a bit wary of rust, it is endemic in WA and as an island I suspect tassie might have the same problems.

Just remember you need a Tassie address to register the car if you purchase one in Tas. Tas Transport will not allow a car to be registered to a WA address with Tasmanian plates.

Got it sorted..spoke to the travel agent today, got flight to melbourne, spend a day there to visit museum/art gallery, next day fly to tassie, 4 days there, fly to melbourne then connect to canberra flight for visit to art gallery there, stay overnight, then fly to melbourne connect to adelaide, spend 2 or 3 days there, the fly back to perth.
after calculating all the kilometres at average fuel cost, amount of time wasted driving, dangers of road travel, and accommodation costs on the way, it is actually better to use flying as much as possible, probably about the same dollar cost but much less tiring and time wasted.

Taz sorry mate i am now in holbrook vic had problems getting on the net and this is the first night I have had access, so missed your mesaage till tonight.
anyhow turned out services tasmania couldn't care less, they told me to buy the car get the owner to lodge a transfer, when I get back to WA get the plates handed in and write to services to let them know, also to drop them a line within 7 days to let them know my plans, so I bought a car in hobart and have driven it right through to queenstown, strahan, launceston, devonport, burnie,and lots of little tassie towns. the travel agent got my tickets refunded because I had travel insurqance and also gave advance notice, so that was ok as well.
found tasmanians were generally courteous and friendly, and drove that way too, apart from some dickheads driving a Corey racing team truck and carrier who sat right on my back bumper, flashing lights then blasting the horn at as they passed me, giving me the finger, because I was sittin on 80 on the 100k road, the thing is there were passing lanes every 5 or 10 k and plenty of passing opportunities with the dotted line coming up, I would have delayed them for no more than 2 or 3 minutes.
what never fails to bemuse me is this behaviour occurred with their name plastered all over their truck and trailer. I guess they wear their caps backwards as well.
One thing I did notice is that tassies generally seem reluctant to overtake even with plenty of space to do so safely, not at all like west aussies so now there are west aussies driving a tasmanian registered car, should cause endless confusion for hapless victorians/ns welshmen/sth aussies expecting timid tassie drivers!
had a great time would like to return one day.
