Just wondering which of the 302 V8's is better. The 302 Windsor or the 302 Cleveland ? Also you have the 351 Windsor and the 351 Cleveland, which is the better of them ? I don't know much about these motors. What are the major differences of these two Motors. Horsepower etc. How did Ford come up with the name "Windsor" ?

Personally I am a Cleveland fan.

I would get the 302 Clevo block and stroke it to 393.

I'll go the other way because I am a Windsor fan.

If you want to stay with 302 cubic inches go the Windsor as it's physically smaller & lighter than the Cleveland is. So if you are putting it into a lightweight car such as a Capri, Cortina or XK/XL/XM/XP then the 302W is a no brainer.

The 302C is the same block as the 351C so it can be stroked and fitted with 3V alloy heads and you will have a stonking performer so if you want something to rebuild to more than 302 CI then the Clevo is the best.

Alloy heads, mild camshafts, extractors and decent 4 barrel inlet manifolds are quite easily available for either engine however most of it will be Aussie quality if you go the Cleveland route as the Seppo's never built a 302C.

The downside is that a 302C can be picked up for $300 but a 302W will likely set you back twice that amount.

depends on what you are fitting it to, the Windsor is a narrower V8 which is why it is limited to certain older cars withough engine bay modifications

if your limiting yourself to such small cubes then go Windsor, smaller lighter and cheaper for parts, the Cleveland is still a full size block compared to the Windsor. but if you can fit a Cleveland then go a 351c

The best 302 is the windsor as i was made to be a 302.
The cleveland was made to be a 351.
You dont see anyone racing a 302 cleveland, but a fool.

No it's not. as the 302 chev motor we race hear nowadays was modified with a lower deck height than the old 302 chev, as it's a modern day type of block and it was made to the same as the Windsor deck height.

The old first type Windsor heads were not that good but with the old Cleveland type that problem was fixed but today we have much better alloy heads that that old rubbish.

Them new 302 chev type race blocks cost a lot of money.

Wasn't the 302 Chev an early 1980's smog strangled boat anchor in much the same way that the 255 Windsor was?

Or was that the 305?

Jim, the 305 was the smogger motor you're thinking of.

Premier 350 was only having a light-hearted dig. Question was which 302 is better - it didn't specify Clevo or Windsor as the only selection criteria.... he just threw a 3rd hat into the ring with the Chev 302 (the one from the 60s).
