I am a great Holden fan and always look at Holdens when buyimg a replacement car. I was however a little disappointed with the Holden Cruze 1.8 manual petrol version when I took for a drive when compared to Mazda 3 and Hyundai i30.
I looked at base model versions costing about $21K. While I thought it compared well inside with comfort and equipment levels I was disappointed with its performance. It seemed to lack the power of the other 2, and came with steel wheels not alloys as on Mazda 3.
What do others think when comparing the three makes base models? Do you the the new Nissan Pulsar might be a possibility. At
this stage I'm leaning towards the Mazda 3 but feel free to put a case for the Cruze!

How do the running/servicing/parts costs compare between the 3?

I don't know, but it's part of the overall picture for car buying.
Ditto drepreciation.

I was recently looking for a car for my Mrs. Whilst she wanted an SUV, the comparison might help. I looked at and drove everything. The best of the lot in the end was a Hyundai ix45. The diesel actually drove the best, but with great hesitation I would buy one. I found it hard to go past the warranty, apparant quality and engine torque/power depsite the fact for years I have preached Mazda as the best of the Japanese brands. In the end I found a really good deal on an 11 month old Lexus RX350 demonstrator at basically half price, but I felt the Holden, Mazda and the Suburu were terribly underpowered in the same market. The Subara XV was probably the worst of the lot, felt like a Janome under the bonnet.

We bought an I30 Diesel Auto about 2 years ago for our runaround buzz box. Never thought I'd buy a diesel and never thought I'd buy a car made in Korea. Have to say, we've never had a problem in the 70 K's we've done in it. Come to think of it, there was one problem, I filled it with 95 one day. It pulls very well on the freeway and returns about 6.1 litres per 100 K's. We're thinking of upgrading again and a new I30 diesel is back on top of the list. They cost a bit more then $21K 'though.

Just watch any diesel with a particulate filter for a runabout. The ix45 didn't have one.

No problems with the I30. Had a friend living in the 'burbs of Sydney. She bought a new VW Polo diesel. After a couple of weeks of running around, the DPF light came on. Took it back to the dealer and they did whatever they did to fix it. A few weeks later the same thing happened. She ignored the warning light. The car stopped. Roadside assist said they couldn't do anything about it, had to be towed back to the dealer. Dealer advised that the car had to be driven at 80KPH or more for 20K's every 2 to 3 weeks, otherwise the DPF would cause a problem. Pretty sad for a Polo which is ideally a city dweller. She ended up selling the bloody thing.

My wifes cousin has a Cruze. Took it for its 30,000k service which was $440. They told her it needed new brake pads and rotors. At 27,000k !!!!! $550 was quoted her to fix it. They told her it was common with them. I asked her if she raced it or something.
We have a Suzuki Swift MY10 manual. Awesome car for its class and price range. Far better quality than any Korean garbage which i don't understand Aussies insist on buying Korean and chinese cars. Anyway, I just took it in for its 30,00k service. I asked them to check the pads, they said they were designed to last for 120,000km!!! Amazing! I wanted to trade up to a Cruze, two reasons, one is for the boot space we are lacking as a family of five, secondly because it is Australian made and I would be supporting local industry. I ill be keeping an eye on this thread to see if anyone else has any pro's or cons to share about them Cruze.

Everybody has their own brand preference, but I believe that the current crop of Korean cars to be virtually up to Japanese standards & much, much, much better than anything Chinese. Current model Hyundai/Kia cars are good examples. Many so-called Japanese cars are actually now built in Thailand, but they are still good cars.

I'm not a FWD or Cruze fan but I have a lot of customers who are happy Cruze owners, especially the current model with the 1.4iTi motor. The earlier Korean built examples are less liked.

On the subject of small passenger Diesels, I don't think the economics add up in Australia, where any fuel savings are wiped out by more expensive fuel, higher service costs & less performance. The DP filter mentioned is a very common issue. Small modern petrol sedans are also super-thrifty.

2nd hand Diesel sedan values at the auctions show that many now know his. The sought after 2nd hand small car is always the petrol automatic version.

2nd hand VW values are not as good as the equivalent Japanese/Korean/Thai built cars & Diesels are usually avoided like the plague.

yeah Simon i quite like them myself & wanted to buy one for the mrs then they had a special on today tonight program and they recon they are an absolute lemon plagued with problems .so I've steered away a little from them.as far as the particulate filter they need to burn off the carbon every 400 km or so and if you turn the engine off while its burning off this leads to the light coming on and if driven without doing a manual burn off it eventually brings the car to a crawl this is put in place to prevent damage to the filter that's when it has to go back to the dealer for a computer overwrite so they can do a manual burn off .they are quite a good system if you use them correctly but as we all lead a busy life style we have no time to wait for the filter to do its job properly.

The problems with modern Diesels isn't limited to the DP filter burn off issues, the longevity of the electronic injectors is also looming as a very costly drama.

These injectors are not like petrol injectors, they use a piezoelectric type, which seem to often do little more than just last enough to get past the end of the warranty period. Ask any owner of a late Hi-Lux or Navara. The injectors on these cost well $2,000 to $3,000 per set & they need to be programmed to match the ECU.

I know this because I earn my living selling these things to the trade.

Hi All,

Thanks for the great replies. I took the new Toyota Corolla for a test drive On weekend and I was really impressed with it.
I am going to test drive Nissan Pulsar during the week.
I'm still inclined to favour Mazda 3 at this stage but gee we are spoilt for choice and I would be happy with either Mazda 3,i30 or Corolla , unfortunately Cruze is my least preferred.
Let you know what I think about Pulsar.

I just bought the Mrs a 2011 Cruze (ex-holden factory staff car).

Mrs loves it by comparison with the TS Territory we got rid of (fuel guzzling tyre chewing bucket of crap).

Doesn't have the same mod cons as a Mazda 3 and isnt very fast...but then shes not racing any where. 5 star safety and built in Australia.

I am happy to try and do my bit.

Test drove Pulsar today, nice modern design, comfortable interior, good performance. Was disappointed that base model didn't have Ipod connection or USB port.
I am tempted to keep my current car which although its old is in excellent condition and needs nothing doing to it and buying another classic old Holden..... always wanted a manual HR Premier...lol

My first post in Fastlane in quite a few years... Come to think, I never actually used to post here at all!
Dr Terry, if you're checking this topic you might recall me under a different name, I created Fastlane back in 1996 and sold it to RSP in 2002. (Jeez I'm getting old!)

Anyhow - I have a Cruze as my company car and am reasonably happy with it. Mostly for the driver legroom (I'm 185cm or 6'1" in old measurements). Never understood why they didn't fit a footrest, I've fitted one meant for a VX Commodore.

It's one of the last of the Korean-built models, and it handles quite well, but it's a 1.8 petrol auto so I cross myself and pray before overtaking a road train!

I preferred the turbodiesel but employer went for the cheaper option. The diesel would probably be okay as it does of a lot of country driving, I don't think the DPF would be such a problem.

Would I buy one? Yes, I'm trying to convince Mrs Cog-swapper the diesel Cruze wagon or hatch could replace her Kia Cerato hatch (good car, but I hate the red instrument lighting - the Cruze has one of the best dashboards in the business!)

Cheers - Cog-swapper.
