where is the body number located on a vk sedan and what should it match to

The body number is on the body ID plate, but I think you mean the chassis number.
The chassis number is stamped on the top of the left-hand (passenger side) strut tower. That number should match the number on the ADR compliance plate (the one with all the ADR numbers, number of passengers & the compliance date etc.).
