Anyone seen the ads for the new Malibu ?
Any thoughts ?

It looks sort of like the Impala LT's I saw all over Oahu and Maui a few weeks ago. |

I like the Holden ads, they're a good representation of the company's philosophy and I feel good driving my Holden when the ads are strong.
When I read about the Malibu coming out I thought oh yeah, this will have a big link to Malibu in California as its a pretty cool upmarket suburb. You know like the connection between the name and the marketing image.
But I miss the connection with the Malibu ads, maybe I'm thinking too deep or not deep enough. I've never seen a Holden ad like this that didnt make me proud.
Is it just me ?

I think you're right. The Malibu advert doesn't say much.
When a company introduces a new nameplate, a little more is required.

When you name a car it inspires images that give the car a personality and I instant thought of Malibu the suburb in California,and then Malibu the surfboard, and I guessed the ads would centre around a savvy upmarket car for young couples with a sporty edge.very social media, very fashionable. What I saw in the ad was a world of beige and a murky coloured car. I had thought to trade in and get one when they came out, I almost had myself sold on one before the ads, maybe I'm a bit of a sucker for cool car names. But not now ... Yeah Kingswood is such a great suburb of Sydney.
Sorry but cars named after American landmarks and sold to Australians just smacks of some yank pulling the strings to me. However I suppose there have been plenty of French landmarks used as well.
Perhaps they could have tried the Holden Rooty Hill or the Holden Todd River?

I don't mind foreign names as some evoke useful feelings but If you looked for a while there would be some really suitable names from our own country.

My guess is that its a dig at the carappliance/whitegoods maker toyota.
Malibu is up against the camry- which is concieved as a boring, bland, beige kind of car appliance.
Hence everything but the Malibu is beige. Even the Coupe de ville in the background.
I drove a 2011 Malibu in the US last year. If this is anything like as good, it's a winner. |

Related but different experience.
I hired a Camaro on Oahu. It was only a V6, driving it was I suppose like driving a V2 CV6 and judging the CV8. BUT, I was quite underwhelmed. For a car that was supposed to be a good thing being all VE heritage etc it was nowhere near as good a car as my V2 CV8. It steered and sat on the rodd nice, but the actual car itself was very poorly finished inside (way too much plastic), and entry and exit from the vehicle was near impossible if for some reason you couldn't fully open the door, like if you were in a carspace next to another car. Basically made me decide that when HSV sell them here I don't wan't one. Hopefully the Malibu is better designed/finished inside than the Camaro. |
