Just read a post by Joe Kenwright on the Shannons Club Forum who put the following question:
Imagine if you were in charge of Holden at any point in its history, which combination of features, model levels and drivetrains would you have built for yourself or for customers? The rules are the bits that you combine had to be available at the time and already in the system. For example, there are two Holdens I would love to own. A road version of the Repco Round Australia Commodores with full house Bathurst LJ GTR XU-1 mechanical package and a W427 packaged in today's VF SS V Redline. And even better has someone you know built the ideal combination that Holden never built. Over to you.

Here is my idea of a quirky parts bin special: Ok.Sticking to Joe's rules....How about a Gemini Kamikaze GTS/RR Coupe'? (the "R-R" tag stands for Road Rage) Running the same drivetrain Joe ordered in the Repco Commodore including the Commodore Macpherson strut front and coil rear salisbury 3.36:LSD. A9-X steel wheel and guard flare package wheel, XU-1 rear ducktail boot spoiler and twin outlet muffler. L-34 style front spoiler. Scary Jap/Oz hybrid.....Of course the finishing touch for this little weapon would be the inclusion of the following two iconic features, an HQ GTS steering wheel and HKGTS stripes and badging. Production run of 300. Four colours only available Picardy Red, Lone-O-Ranger, Purr-Pull and of course....Warwick Yellow (the colour of the first Holden to win at Bathurst). I could just imagine P Brock methodically planning how to homologate it for the1980 group "C" season. This lethal little pig would be nearly as murderous as it's South African cousin, the 1973 ( Vauxhall Viva based) Chev Firenza 302 V8 homologation special........oops I am drooling. Cheers. Nick. 6.0 Malibu with rear wheel drive (not quite within the rules) and six speed manual. Or Salamanca Red SL/R, Black vinyl with inserts 350 LH Torana with Muncie M21 and 3.11:1 12 bolt. James |
You only have to be in front at the end of the race. |

There are three that stand out for me, two of which GMH actually built cars but they were never released:
HK GTS using L88 Camaro driveline (ie 425hp 427, M22 and 12 bolt). HG GTS350 using 1970 Camaro LT1 driveline (360hp 350, M22 and 12-bolt) HG Bathurst special GTS (L34 spec 308, Saginaw and 10 bolt). |

Maybe not as grandiose as some of those above, but what about an A9X hatch with a VC Brock 308, TH350, a/cond, p/steer, cruise etc. etc.
It would make a very civilized car, especially for us city slickers.

Which two did Holden build HK 1837? How about the Holden Hurricane and GTR-X, two gorgeous cars that never made it. If a could dip into the 1969 GMH parts bin, maybe a Hurricane fitted with a 350 leaving the gearbox and differential as is. |

Or... Wb uteV8, sports dash, manual, bucket seats, then take it to HDT and get all Magnum options possible.

GMH built an L34 optioned HK Premier, but I think it was a Powerglide and probably an LSD 2.78 banjo. It will only have been the same spec 327 that was in the Impala/Parisienne and HK GTS327 though not a 300hp version. |

I'm With Dr Terry on this one except that I'd want the VL/VN Group A twin throttle body 5.0 or maybe one of those blueprinted 5.7's out of one of those yellow HSV VS's with the black wheels (were they called HSV GTS?)
Back it with a 5 or 6 speed manual and maybe replace "the plank" with a UC dash & have it rolling on VN Group A wheels.

Keeping everything period (as in could be pulled straight off the "production line" or accessory list at the time as such) I'd go an SV88 with walkinshaw EFI/T5 running gear, Scheel seats trimmed to match, and Momo stars instead of the Walky rims. I'd also throw in HDT's plus pack (level 2) suspension, that was still available to their customers. |
Cheers,

Yes, good combo, but a bit out of period. I think the 'rules' here would allow a few years leeway, but there is a huge gap in time between an A9X & a VL/VN or a VS. Dr Terry |

Good point. Then it would probably have to be a 454 powered HQ/HJ Statesman/Caprice with every piece of luxury fruit available.
Luxury........The new performance!! |

You think like Leo and his peers. HJ Caprice (which is what you describe ie Statesman with the lot!) was to get a 400ci SBC as standard, and it would have also probably been optional on Deville, GTS and LS like the 350 was in HQ. |

Yeah, but a BB 454 LS7 would be the better option.

Hi All
Great discussion. I have to say (mostly because I like homologation cars) my angry little creation is so far my favourite. It would be an absolute bastard of a car capable of inflicting grief to both disrespectful drivers and probably all of its competition on the tracks of the day.
I also love big boofy muscle cars.... they are just so tough. It is a shame that the HQ two door could have been so much more. The 396/427/454 engine was well and truly available on-tap back in the day and it is a travesty that that dick head Evan Green published the super car story in the Herald at the time. The HQ was definitely engineered to handle the torque and power of a big block....if it made it to market the big block HQGTS would have been yet another iconic Aussie Musclecar.Cheers. Nick.
