Hi I recently purchased a couple of Mk1 capri's, ones almost complete with a v6 engine which has been installed later I know this because VIN indicates it was originally a 4cylinder. I would like to find out if its a 3L or a 3.1L . Can any one help with identification. The engine has blue rocker covers and blue sump with black block and heads. with a 40DFAV1 webber.
The other car is a shell only without a compliance plate but has the numbers C99205C stamped on the passenger strut, Does any one know how the code works.
If all else fails, there is always HOPE.

You would be VERY lucky if your engine was one of the 250 3.1's ever made.

The V6 body shells had a recess on the LH inner guard to move the battery an inch or two across. They also have bracing in the back corners of the engine bay directly above the brake booster on the drivers side and the washer bottle on the passenger side.

The other identifiers are that the V6 shell will have 6 mounting points for the front cross member whereas the 4 potters only had four holes. Then if you look under the front wheel well there is a plate up front that contains the captive nuts for the bumper bar irons. These plates run back to behind the struts on the V6's whereas the 4's hat two separate plates either side. One with the bar captive nuts and the other behind the struts.

Compare those points between your two shells and you will know for sure.

Thanks Jim5.0 Ill check out these points tomorrow. Any idea how to find out if this engine is a 3.1L .. On some website they only mention the blue rocker covers as the main identification points which is not really confirming any thing. I have engine number JF1123B if that helps.

The engine number JF1123B is from a 1970 v6 capri automatic.

I don't think there's any real way of knowing if the other engine parts originally came from an RS3100 engine unless they have a specific RS part number on them (which I suspect most won't).

The other number you've quoted (passenger shock tower of the other car) doesn't look like a regular Capri number, maybe it's a Police number?

Capri body numbers were stamped on the drivers side shock tower in 71 & 72, and the slam panel (highest point directly behind the bonnet lock mechanism) in 69 & 70. On the 69 and 70 models, the engine number was stamped on the drivers side shock tower also.

The 69 and 70 Capris used a dual number system similar to the XW Falcons, where the engine number and body number were the same from 71.

Thanks Jamie, Ill check the body out a bit more thoroughly, I also noticed another number 0J11 on the engine to the left of the engine number. Would you know what that is a reference to.
