What spec differences are between a gtr 161s and a 161 (besides carb, manafold and headers)and if any would it be detailed in a Gregory's service manual. Thanks
The difference between good and great is the extra effort

Only from memory: cam, crankshaft, valve springs and exhaust valves, bearings. Plus the paint colour on the engine.

I thought that all Holden 6-Cyl engines from HK-HZ, including Toranas were painted the same colour, i.e. HK Rocket Red.

I did say "from memory" but I think there was 2 x colours used, just can't recall the specifics. There was an engine red and a rocket red. Will check.

AFAIK the 2 other 'reds' were pre-HK.

To my knowledge the 'normal' 149/179/161/186 engines from EH to HR were Holden 'Red' which was a dark red, almost brownish.

179/186 X2 & S motors were painted what they then called Rocket Red. Very confusing, as HK Rocket Red was a different red with a more orange tinge.

I believe that HK Rocket Red carried thru from HK to the end of HZ production for all Holden 6 & V8 engines, including Toranas.

That could be it Terry, it may be the HK-HQ and CKD Chev/Impala engines that had the different colour. I think these used the Holden engine red used on the HD-HR X2/S engines. I did think the S engines in HK-HG and LC were the same too, but it is all off the top of my head so easily could be wrong.
Back to the original query, did 2600S engines get the same internal mods as 186S (ie those I listed)?

Wasn't the air cleaner different? I have a vague memory of a chromed 6 cyl air cleaner top, less the snorkel.

Saw it back in '78 at Accia Ridge at the apprentice induction course.

Hi Terry and Byron

Ben has told me I need to paint the engine in my type two 327 HK "Holden Red" as per X2 etc if that is any help. Would love to get a sample of the colour so I can get it mixed.
Cheers
Nick.

I might have to take this one up with Ben, Nick. The my knowledge HK Rocket Red is a different red to that used on X2 engines.

I believe that all Torana 6 &V8 engines red are the same as the HK-HZ 'HK Rocket red'. It is the EH/HD/HR engines which have 2 different engines reds, different again to HK Rocket Red.

Terry

I think Nick means the Chev engines are painted the X2 red, different to HK-HZ 6cyl and Holden V8 engines.

Yes Byron. I would love to get even a small swipe of the type two 327 engine red on the back of a white paper business card or white paper. I would then be able to get some matching colour mixed.

Can anyone help??
Cheers Nick.

161S Steel crank.
Chrome rocker cover.

I thought the EH-HR was fire engine red.

The LC came out in october 1969 the HK colour engine came out in jan 1968 so that sorts out the fact.
