I have a HJ Caprice in the back yard in inner Melbourne, in the process (slowly) of restoring it (currently unregistered). This weekend, we're to move out of our rental property to another about a km away. The plan was to load it with various parts from the shed, get a permit, and drive it.

Two nights ago, I realised I'VE LOST THE KEYS!!!! Emptied bins, garbage bags, boxes - they've gone.

I need to move it ASAP. A trailer is not an option - it's in the back yard off a tight alley, and the steering is locked.

I can hotwire / make it run, but how do I defeat the steering lock with as little damage as possible to make it drivable for the short distance?

If I was to call a locksmith, would they be able to help? Terrible timing, not like I've no other things to do during a house move!

Thanks all.

Matt

Grab as many early Holden keys as you can find & try them all. You'd be surprised how many will work in a worn lock.

Otherwise pull the steering wheel off, and call a locksmith - the smart ones can force the barrel out without damaging other parts.

If you still have no luck, the steering lock only works against a row of teeth on the back of the steering wheel hub, so for the distance to get it onto a trailer or tilt tray, you could remove the steering wheel (thus defeating the lock) hotwire it to get it running, and then do what that clown did a few months ago & use vice-grips on the steering shaft to steer it.
Cheers,

Mick

Tape the lock down and put the wheel back on steer onto trailer or drive it don't even need tape if you can keep wheel up enough to clear the lock not real safe but will work ...also try a few keys as above one will work for you
