I thought tags were not allowed to be sold on e-bay? I only found out because someone was wanting to buy my HG GTS tags from me and I said I did not know if it was legal (in NZ or Aussy) to sell them , which they replied you can buy them on e-bay ! Mark.

selling VINs is illegal, as is removing or interfering with vins.
tags are not vins.
Chassis numbers are not vins but are regarded as the unique identifiers and are therefore treated as vins, so it is also illegal to remove, trade, etc..
tags are regarded as simply information on the trim, paint, body number, motor etc., although they show the chassis number this is just an ancilliary function, and so is not illegal.
of course anyone buying a gts or similar valuable car wants the tags but they have little legal importance, maybe help identify a stolen vehicle but thats about it.
If ebay or other selling organisations wish to ban them that is a decision for them like advertising firearms or virginity.
if you sell your tags that may be assisting someone to con some unsuspecting buyer, or assisting the rebirthing of a stolen car, but that is your decision.
perhaps if you advertise the selling of the tags and the information on them it will make them useless as anyone can identify that they have come off another car. they then can go over the mantelpiece as souvenirs.

I had a blank ID tag that I tried to sell on eBay. It got pulled twice and I was threatened with cancelling my account if I listed it again.

Ok thanks for that . I kept alot of Holden tags from my years wrecking Holdens , like : HG V8 GTS, HK 327 , 350 Chev Statesman and so on down to FJ . I have made a wall hanging of an HQ and used some tags as part of it . I would post a pic but do not know how to attach to this posting. Mark.

When I spoke to a NSW cop about it (he was a member of the auto-theft group) he told me the trim and thin VIN tags were OK, but I could not remove or keep the tag with the chassis number (and from VN Commodore, the VIN) on it - as in the compliance plate, irrespective of whether or not the actual "chassis" (ie body) containing that number was dead or alive.
Cheers,

Mick

Mick,

I think this comes back to everyone calling the Body Identification Plate a Compliance Plate. The amount of people that talk abou 48 to HK Compliance plates is amazing, considering they do not exist.

It is illegal to remove a Compliance plate. The others are considered to be manuafacturer identifies and are therefore of no significance to vehicle ownership or registration.

In saying this though, to put the manufacturers identifiers onto a different vehicle can be considered fraud if it changs the value of the vehicle, ie taking a set of pre VN Calais tags and placing them on an Berlina. (you cannot do it on VN onwards as the chassis number becomes an ISOVIN which also has the luxury level on it, and changing the ISOVIN or Chassis number is "rebirthing" which is illegal and why Compliance Plates cannot be removed)
But there are so many "policemen" out there that every time tags come up for sale they scream from the roof tops and more people think that it is illegal to deal in these. There are actuall collectors of tags that legitimatley trade in these.

The problem is people see a Monaro tag and straight away think someone is going to turn a Monaro into a GTS350. Truth is though you can buy reasonable quality reproduction tags cheaper than you can buy geniune Monaro tags.
