Hey Guys my mates XB sedan gearbox is stuffed its a V8 and its a 302 with the 4 speed manual, I have the same but its a coupe so this will be a good learning curve for me, we have another 4 speed gearbox to put in it and do we have to lift the motor to exchange boxes? I have only done a swap in gearboxes to a 6cly XF many years ago and I was only assisting the mechanic, what is the tricks to look out for? or is it a tow away job for the guru's?

That is one of the easiest jobs that you can do on an XB.

Simply Remove the gear shift boot and gear shifter from inside the car.

Now underneath the car remove the tailshaft (4 bolts) when you slide the tailshaft out you might be best with a container under the back of the gearbox to catch the oil that will follow the yoke.

Remove the speedo cable (1 bolt).

Support the gearbox with a jack under the main cast iron body then undo the cross member (4 bolts).

Undo the 4 bolts that hold the gearbox to the bell housing and gently slide the gearbox rearward and out.

The job may be a little bit easier if you undo the handbrake cable if it's looking as if it will be in your way.

Also and most important. If you are doing the job with the car up on ramps CHOCK THE WHEELS as there is no car in gear to hold it once you have removed the tail shaft.

Thanks Jim, I think I would be ok to remove it, but putting the box back in would be the same in reverse? and what about a clutch aliment tool? also I got told that the motor may have to come out? that would be a pain in the butt if that has to come to that!

Hey Guys the box is out, and found a part of the casting has been broken off, its the top left but the other three are ok, for many years I have the old 6 cylinder XF box as a spare and I remember it worked ok, can I put that one into the V8? it has some numbers at the side and they are slightly different, is this the gear ratio or serial and build number?
Today we may try and get this thing in to go for a drive today, I just hope the XF box fits.
