Hi all,
I have a HG Ute that Im hunting around for a nice 253 or 308 with trimatic for but I was wondering which model vehicles would a suitable v8 come from? Like I don't want to get one thats too new & needs a heap of different wiring & computers etc like new engines, so what are the restrictions I need to adhere to when selecting a motor please?
I.e if a see a WB with a v8 being wrecked will the motor suit or will there be too many differences to go straight into my ute?
Does it need to be an old blue or red motor etc?

Any info much appreciated.

Also a mate mentioned he thought the steering column on my ute may be for a Powerglide?
He said the selectors appear to be different?
Does this mean I need an engine with a Powerglide gearbox to suit?
Or can the steering be adjusted for a trimatic?

Sorry Im a bit of a newb with all this tech stuff as you can no doubt tell.

Any help appreciated.

Others will chime in to correct me, but isn't the sump & pickup different between the HG & the HQ-WB? And the VB-VL Commodore too.

Personally, I wouldn't worry if it was a red or blue V8. Paint it red and no one will know.

Restrictions vary from state to state, but since the 253/308 were available from the factory in the HG, you shouldn't have issues, as long as you use the V8 springs & brakes.

Remember the blocks changed in late '74 (not sure exactly) to suit the TH 400 bellhousing.

And lastly, have you thought about a Chev crate motor? Might be cheaper than building a 253-308.

You'd need a trimatic column. Plan B, put in a T bar.

Just find yourself a HT-HJ 253 or a 308 with manual, trimatic or powerglide bolt pattern (ie not a TH400 pattern one from an auto HJ).
Just need to change the sump and pickup to suit HT-HG, rest will work OK. If you want to go factory style T-bar you need a late model V8 trimatic from a Commodore with LH selector. If you want to stay column shift you need a HQ-HZ or column shift WB V8 trimatic with RH selector.
If you want to keep the HG throttle linkage and standard carby you will need to find one to suit the engine (253 or 308) and use a carby off a HT-HJ carby (just unbolt the cable throttle bit off a HJ 308 carby, can't remember if a HJ 253 has a bolt on cable throttle piece or not).

You can use a later Holden V8 engine right up to 1988 VL (as long as you pick a manual or trimatic pattern one) but you may run into pollution equipment problems ie have to make the HG comply with the engine, varies from State to State.
