Hi All
Can anyone tell me which versions of the HQ banjo diff (G95,G93 etc) were the most commonly fitted in 6 cylinder cars and which ones were rarer. I'm assuming there was a standard item for manual and automatic cars and options on top?

3.55 manual and 3.36 auto I think were the standard fare in all built for Australian market 6cyl applications where banjo was standard. Of course 6cyl tonners were 3.55 but Salisbury and i'm not sure what HQ Statesman got behind 202, I presume still 3.55 and 3.36.

Did the HQ tonners get the 4.44 salisbury or was that just from HJ on.

HQ banjo 3.9 option maybe some utes with 173ci may of had this ratio ?

Some HQ 3.08 opt banjo 6 cyl would be bugger all.

Yes, you could get the 4.44 Large Salisbury in late HQ One-Tonners.

The parts book lists 5 different Banjo ratios for HQ.
G92 2.78
G93 3.08
G91 3.55
G95 3.36
G90 3.90

The 3.90 ratio was a rare option usually seen in 173 manual commercials or taxis.

I've never seen a 2.78 Banjo in an HQ, but they're probably out there somewhere.

The 3.55, 3.36 & 3.08 are the common ones. Generally the lower one (3.55) is used behind 173 with manual trans & the higher one (3.08) seen in 202 autos. Also, generally speaking utes & vans go one lower than passenger cars.

3.9 banjo was the standard diff on 130ci export HQ. Also standard on HQ 173 3spd for NZ. It was a performance axle option here but rare. I did come across a couple of utes sold to I think a Govt dept in Tasmania that had a 3.9 banjo axle.

4.44:1 was introduced to cab chassis for HJ, but possibly filtered into HQ as Terry says as HJ was sighned off and read earlier in 1974. This axle was introduced due to the huge amount of warranty claims on 6cyl manual cab-chassis clutches. There was even a national service dept competition to see who could change a clutch out in the least time!

I can't recall 2.78:1 banjo ever being an option for HQ or HJ. Past HG the only cars you'll see a 2.78:1 banjo centre in is Torana.

From memory, wasn't the 3.90 standard on export HQs with the 138 engine?
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

HJ with 138, HQ had 130 (as did early HJ).

I do believe that the 138 was just a bit too big for some markets so they had to make the 130 as over 2.2L the rego tax stung you a lot more.

The grey motor to some exports may of been using the old 132.5ci bore instead of the big 138 grey. it must of hurt the EH HD HR sales over there with only the big 149ci. it was 130 in the HK was it or 138.

4.44 Ratio works out to what at 1000 RPM ? must be about 3000 rpm at 80 km/h
M22 1st was low as.
No M22 in the 253 tonner from what i remember just M20 with 3.55 i don't think 4.44 with the 253 ?

I think the size limit for rego in Malaysia etc was below 138ci, must have been 2.2 litre. It may have changed later as HJ was revised to 138 at some stage. It is 2.5 litre now in Malaysia, all the Hiluxes over there were 2.5 litre D4D engines when I was there a couple of years ago.

4.44 was 6cyl only in Australia and manual only on cab-chassis.

from what I have seen in HQ, its simular to what DR terry said
173 = 3.55
202 commercial = 3.55
202 Manual, = 3.36
202 auto 3.08
Old holdens brought on the spot, quick decision, cash paid.

i would have thought 202 auto were all 3.55, 308 is pretty tall.

Many HQ 6cyl models (commercial and passenger) have 3.55 as std rear axle behind manual and 3.36 behind auto.

I have wrecked alot of HQs and most (NZ) 202 autos were 3.36 and manuals 3.55, I think 202 auto went to 3.08 in HX . HQ 253 auto big sals LSD 3.08 , Statesman 308 & auto 2.78. 173 manual ute 3.90 & 1 tonner (we only got HJ on) was big sals HD axles 4.44 with M22. Mark.

most of the higher level wagons that I have seen (kingswood, vacationers, premiers) that are 202 auto with 3.08 diff. but a lot of the HX HZ ones were 3.36, probably due to HP loss with pollution gear
