People,
I'm chasing some ideas on what options there are when replacing the diff in a HT.
Car is a Brougham, engine is mild but healthy 383 small block Chev, transmission is TH350. Car is driven rarely but with spirit if and when appropriate.
Existing but broken diff is a non lsd 2.78 banjo. I expected the diff to fail and decided to worry about a suitable diff when the time came.
Obviously, from the above specs, originality is not important. I'm prepared to pay the required money to ensure I only have to do this once. I'm in Western Australia (south). Car is not a burn out car, but it will continue to be driven with spirit if and when appropriate.
Have I forgotten anything?
What are your thoughts?
Thanks.
Mike

9" is the obvious choice. VB-VK 10-bolt Holden diff, but will be disc brakes. VL Borg Warner but disc brakes also. Or chase up an original HK-HG 10-bolt, but people want big bucks for these despite a lot of them factory fitted. Example (not a good oneI know as lots of $ spent on this one!): http://www.ebay.com.au/i...a34ddc864#ht_1212wt_893

All VB-VK 10-bolt will have rear discs, but a lot of VK-VL Borg Warners will have rear drums. Dr Terry |

Not the V8 or turbo ones? Just the normal 6cyl variety. |

HK1837 - Thanks, the one in the ebay link I suppose is as 'bolt up' as I'm going to get. 3.36 would be pretty close to what I was looking for also. I guess I should see what the west coast diff boys can do in the way of a nine inch for me. I must admit $5k was more than I was guessing at. Does a Commodore disk brake diff mean I will have to put up with the average park brake set up? Cheers.
Dr Terry - Thanks for the info.
Cheers
Mike

Yes, if you use Commodore rear discs. I've never checked if there is a difference between the diff flange to axle flange between HK-WB drum brake and VB-VK disc brake. What i'm getting at is with some machine work to the axle hub and a stud pattern change it is possible that a set of HK-HG backing plates and drum will fit on a VB-VK (and probably VL V8 Borg Warner) Commodore rear axle. If not those brakes maybe a set of VK-VL Commodore 6cyl rear drums? Might be worth trying to see how it fits. For your application a VL V8 or turbo Borg Warner diff might do the trick. From memory they are slightly narrower than a HK-HG diff and a VN-VS one is slightly wider. |

HK1837,
Thanks for the additional info. I will see what Commodore diffs I can find and do some measuring. If it comes to it, a Commodore disk rear park brake is not a show stopper.
I guess I need to find what Commodore diffs I can find over here and compare it to what I can get in the way of a fabricated 9".
Thanks again.

Correct. If the VL had a turbo or a V8, or was a Calais (with any engine) it had rear disc brakes. However, all other SL, Executive or Berlina sedans & wagons had rear drums, unless especially optioned otherwise. Meaning that the rear drum variety is far more common in wrecking yards. V8 & turbos had 28 spline 4-pinion diffs & 6-cyls had 25-spline 2-pinion diffs. Dr Terry |

Gents.
Thanks for all your input.
I have just finished fitting a Ford 9" diff, fabricated to suit my HT. Axles are HT pattern and I'm running my HT drum brakes. Ratio is 3.0 to 1. Centre is Eaton True Trac.
Install went pretty well and so far I am happy with the diff.
I have a redundant HT banjo housing and axles if anyone wants it. I'm in the south west of WA. It has been offered elsewhere but first in gets it. Free to good home.
Cheers all.
Mike
