Im looking at a Cobra with a reverse facing scoop on the bonnet, bonnet is cut to take top of air cleaner. The vendor is telling me this set-up was an option from the factory but I can only see this on cars 2 - 31. (The one I am looking at is a factory 302, now 351)
Am I correct in thinking the scoop is aftermarket?

The scoop may be a genuine scoop but I doubt the car left the factory floor with it.

Might have been a dealer fit but not a factory fit. The scoop was only put on the Bathurst specials and they were all 351 4 speed cars. They also had an all black interior with scheel front seats.

Factory circle is not a true circle it has a start and finish point with a short strait section

Cobra 001 also had a reverse cowl ex factory as it was the promotional car and is the only know auto with factory fitted reverse cowl.

001 was a 302 as well and a woman that worked at ford first bought it and when she sold it no one has seen it since.

That's right. I forgot about that. Number 1 was a 302 and number 351 was a 351.

I'm looking at this car again, Cobra 293. Does anyone know the car?
It is a factory 4.9 manual with a 5.8 transplant. I notice in the specs that the 4.9's had different gearbox ratios to the 5.8. Would the 4.9 still have a top loader? How can I tell by looking at it?
The rear screen does not have a metal moulding around it, just rubber. Is this correct?
The brakes are very abrupt, I recall leaving a rubber 'reaction disc' out of a Holden brake booster years ago which caused a similar problem. Is this likely to be the problem with the Cobra?

XC's would have had Single Rail 4 speed boxes not Top Loaders.

Thanks Jim, the current owner believes it is a top loader, how would I tell by looking at it? (I know nothing about Fords).
I guess a single rail is not as good? Ae they a weak gearbox? It certainly felt good on the test drive.
Is there anything else I need to know about buying this car?

Single rails are not as strong as a toploader however they are much less clunky to drive with. A 351 Single Rail has bigger internals and different ratios to a 6 cyl/302 Single rail box.
Single rail the reverse is push gearstick down and the it's to the left of 1st. Reverse is in a different position on a Toploader but I cannot remember where it is.
If you look under the car a Toploader will have three external linkages on the passenger side of the box whereas the Single rail has one rod between the shifter and the box's main housing.
If you intend on giving the car a bunch of mechanical abuse then the toploader will withstand more than a single rail however normal driving will be more enjoyable with a single rail. Unless of course the nylon thread on the single rails shifter gives out which results in the gearstick coming out in your hand. You can buy new nylon or even steel threads though. |

Thanks Jim. It is in fact a top loader with the external linkages. Reverse is left and forward, but no push down. It's very nice to use but then my only other manual has a Saginaw so anything would feel good.

Hey. I know the guy who owned this car and he knows all the details on it. Every thing about it. Was talking a lot of engine talk I had no idea what he was talking about. He told me about it today and I google what it would look like then I thought I might try and find the exact car for him and just let him know it's still around. He runs the moama market in Echuca moama. Google it and call him. Dean would be happy to chat about it. He sold it in Kalgoolie in 1996. You probly don't want to know how much for. Cheers
