Hi I was interested in knowing if there is a difference in width from outside of rocker covers between a 351W and 289/302W have read conflicting information on the net, also wanting to know if either are narrow than 350 chev looking at both powerplants to replace a holden 253 in my 37 Dodge Fargo thanks for your assistance

You want outside of rocker covers or max width of engine which will be at the exhaust manifolds?

I can measure a 302 for you on Sunday and a 351W will be 1.3 inches wider than a 289/302 as it's a 90degree V with a 1.3 inch higher deck. I may also be able to measure a mates 351W if he still has the heads on it.

A Cleveland is wider again than any Windsor but someone once told me that a 253/308 was wider than a Cleveland (unconfirmed though)so any 351 (except maybe a 351M) should squeeze where a 253 lives. People tend to use the small block Chev due to it's length advantages over a SBF.

Why not a small block Chrysler engine? 360 cubes of fury would be better than any 351 or 350 in a Fargo. Or easier still a Holden 355 would be a bolt in replacement for your 253 which would save you $$$ & fitting headaches.

Hi Jim, the main issue is the clearance between tappet cover and break booster which is probably about 10mm have a set of 5.0 efi heads, manifolds and headers to build a 308 but heads will not clear booster, was told a chev motor is much narrower I have a 66 Mustang with 289 and it is about 50-60mm narrower than holden block, I may have to move booster regardless but would prefer not to tamper with location or size of booster, no know enough about Chrysler motors but would be ideal to put something like that back in, I am wanting to run bolt on injection like a Edlebrock system and the one I had my eye on they only make for chev,ford or I think Chrysler motors I know there are other systems available to suit Holden 308 etc. Yes would be cheaper easier to go 308 or probably Chev , will make some inquiries about width of Hemi V8's

Not Hemi V8's they are huge. You want to enquire about "LA" series small blocks if talking Chrysler. FWIW the Chrysler small block has a firing order of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 which I believe is the same as the Chev.

I know this because I put solid lifters in my old 360 and found myself continually adjusting them.

Know what you mean about the 5 litre Holden heads making the engine super wide but the 355 internals would fit an old 308 block if you could find a good one.

If you have a 289 then you already know how wide a 302W is because they are essentially the same block and heads & the only tangible difference between them is the rocker covers. You can fit 289 covers onto a 302.
