Geoff So this has an ADR plate and an assembly plant engine number and a Chassis number? You've probably mentioned it before here, but do yoi know what it was built for? Consulate duty? |

Hi Byron, It does not have an ADR Plate, but has Chassis number, Assembly Plant Engine number, and also a Queensland Personal Import Plate. It was a Consulate Vehicle up until 1978 or 79 New Zealand Embassy in Cape Town. My Father would know what year as he purchased it from the then Ambassador after he left his position and returned to NZ with the vehicle. Ebbetts Holden in NZ were consigned by this Ambassador gentleman to sell the vehicle when my Father bought it. Edited by user Wednesday, 8 October 2014 9:10:57 AM(UTC)

Cool. So is it a NZ spec Chev 350 or SA spec car? The only other one of these I have seen had no chassis or engine numbers and non-Aussie ID plates, meaning it was a CKD car. As you say yours was assembled in Oz as it has a chassis number and GMH engine number plus obviously the GMH style VIN and BODY plates (without the Lion?).
I was just wondering if it was a NZ spec car sent to South Africa for consulate duty? |

Pretty sure it was sent to South Africa, reason I say that is it's a late 74 model fully assembled here and badged as a Chevrolet 350 Caprice. I once told you about a GMH marketing guy I knew and established a very good friendship with from an ebay seminar. Well he told me that only 668 cars with this spec were assembled for South Africa. They were kept in the Elizabeth Plant in a storage area way down the back of the place and out of site. He remembered them vividly. (Was working for GMH at the time) Phil Lockman passed away a few years ago and gave me some literature on them. The car does not have any GMH compliance plate, hence having to have the car Engineered when it arrived back into Australia to comply for Rego here. Im sure I sent you photos of the body plates, don't know - maybe it Greg when he had one he was wrecking out. The body number ends in "T" which GMH designated for Caprice, all other HQ Statesmans I've ever seen end in "S" which is DeVille. Remember Australia never had the Caprice until the roll out of the HJ. I must admit I've never seen a Statesman Custom, so can't comment. The plates are Pressed General Motors Holden and the body plate does have the Lion. We could throw arguements all day about what it is, I have the owners glovebox manual, Import papers, and Queensland Engineers report, as well as the stuff Phil gave me before his passing. I think it's pretty darn unique in any language, Solid rear bumper bar (No inserts) Central locking, power everything, Full instrumentation, Chevrolet Bowtie Insignia in the centre of the steering wheel and on door panels. Corvette style Aluminium Rocker Covers, Original 350 snorkel Air cleaner, Orginal Bowtie Hubcaps and trim rings, and the very unique one piece Horizonal bars Front Grille with Chevrolet Cursive badge in the top right corner and Large Bowtie Centre grille badge. (Not add on's from Rare Spares) I'm not asking or expecting the earth for this car, just what it's worth. What that is exactly - I don't know.

I do remember a bit about it now you mention all that. It is the sort of car that interests me. If you still have it around Xmas I may even take a look (forgot where you are in QLD). I'd have to sell my HJ Premier though to clear up some shed space. Will ponder over it. |

Ok then, I'm in Sydney's Western suburbs. I had the car up at my Fathers place in Caloundra Qld for a while, but it's back with me now. I'd like to get it sold before the end of March next year. Got lots planned for my Camaro and want it finished before my eldest son graduates from High school. Thanks for your interest, see what happens I guess.
