I'm not bagging your car. Its rare, Commodorenut and myself know that. If you are a 40 year old, you wouldn't act like you do to be honest. Be mature about it, not angry, simple.
Had time to think and your right mate. Think I should eat some humble pie. Its all too easy to get flustered and whatever when you're trying to communicate through a bloody computer. Please except my apologies for any disrespect i have thrown your way. At the end of the day, we are all interested in the same thing, GREAT SLE cars. Hope we can mend this bridge and look forward to any input you can provide, whether good bad or in different. Cheers mate.

Apology accepted mate. I know the feeling. Its a good car to get hold of, due to not just the unique paint code but also, not many of the VB SL/Es out there anymore.
Good luck on it. Hell even if i had the coin, would love to buy it. I have a VB SL/E 308 pack as it is lol. |

There are two different 308 powered VB SL/Es, manual 4 speed 308 pack and TH350/TH400 3 speed 310 packs. |

Thanks for the apology acceptance SLENUT. I hope i haven't put you off participating in this thread, in fact i am really interested in what you have to say and am prepared to listen. I know you mentioned it may have been a test car, for VC Shadow tone? or do you think GMH may have been planning a shadow tone release on the VB series? The previous owner said someone told him it was one of six, do you believe this number or do you think it was something different? Behind the back seat it has a big X and 1 in chalk or crayon, the underside of the grill also has an X and number 2. Dunno whats going on there?? If it was a test on VC shadow tone, why so early? 5th month 79. I see you have a couple of rare beasts youself, can you tell us all a little about them? Production numbers, options, how many may be left etc etc. Cheers mate.

SLENUT and COMMODORENUT, i just found a video ad on the net from the VC launch and its the shadow tone black over silver car and it has VB vinyl door trims and the little round plug where the VB choke went on the manual cars! This car of mine has to be it guys. Its got the correct interior with rear head rests , VB grey vinyl door trims, high rise console and the plug hole still showing as well as NO rear badges and my car has never had those either. Any thoughts??? This is getting interesting.

Its called Commodore VC Television ad- The revolution continues. Is there any way of finding out when this TV ad was made?? Anyone got any ideas?? The car in the ad is definately a VB done as a VC. Its got half VB and half VC interior, VB vinyl door trims, VB dash with VC seats and single spoke steering wheel all in grey and its VC Black over silver on the outside with the only badges being SLE on the rubber strip on front doors. No rear badges on boot.

Only the one square Holden badge in the centre as my car does. NO SLE badges or 4.2 badges. I had a look inside boot and its never had badge holes drilled for SLE or 4.2.

The SL/E badges never had holes, all stuck on with thick double sided tape.
Years ago I happen to be a car show here in Tassie, I saw this grey haired bloke with USA accent talking about the LE Monaro. I found out it was Leo Pruneau. Anyway I asked him a few questions on VB Commodores. He told me he pushed for the shadow tone option on the release of the VB SL/E but higher management said no. However they agreed shadow tone on VC SL/E's. He also did tell me there is a few VB SL/E's out there factory with shadow tone, to gain public opinion. He said they were on later 1979 models. He recalled a few in black/silver, Torquay Sand/Sandlewood Beige metallic and two tone green. One VB SL/E shadow tone was used to show the dealers in 1978 too, Tourquay Sand/Sandlewood in colour. Leo said these were standard VB SL/E's but often later in life people added the VC gear on them. He didn't tell me how many were made like it though.
I can't answer on the chalk marks, my VB has some queer chalk marks i can't even read/understand.
As for my VB SL/E, I have asked a few that worked at Holden etc, they tell me not many ticked the "Sport A option" on the VB SL/E, which is 308 pack VB SL/E. They tell me only about 100 were done, about 50 with 3.08 diff, other 50 with 2.60 diff. Only options they had were electric windows, central locking and leather interior. Spose at the time VB SL/E's were pushed a luxury car, hence more "Sport B option", 310 pack SL/Es built.

Shadowtone was a sensation in the late 70s & early 80s, and people wanted to jump onto it - IMO Holden were mad not to jump onto it earlier. It was the next big craze after the vinyl roof faded (or peeled) out of fashion.
Because of this popularity, there were also lots of non-shadowtone cars that dealers turned into shadowtone to appease trendy customers prepared to pay - this is more obvious in the VH era though, as their tags (after 12/81) don't have "top" on them, so it's usually up to the combo number to ID it. In the later 80s it was a good bargain way to cover up the failing GMH metallic paint on the roof/boot/bonnet. GMH did a heap of print literature pushing the shadowtone cars - they were the hero cars in a doom & gloom oil crisis era.
Regarding the chalk marks - every early commodore I've owned, and every single one I've wrecked out (almost 50) all had chalk marks of some sort, so this is not limited to "eXperimental" cars, nor does the X necessarily mean that either - my VH race car (based on an SL/X 253) also has an X in chalk on the rear bulkhead, and it's nothing special.... If you look at the way door trims are marked in chalk/crayon with AU3 and/or A31 scrawled on the back (almost illegibly), and other components that are marked, it was all about the ID of parts on the production line. In one model range power steering cars all had a particular marking to remind the operators (who must have been a forgetful bunch) that power steer had to be fitted - this was later circled in red texta on the broadcast sheet.
I haven't seen the ad, but if everything like you say matches up, them there's the possibility it's the car that was made for it, and this could be a reason for the much longer lead time than normal for pre-production cars. (I will refrain from calling it a pilot, as it is not a true pilot/trial car for VC assembly with all the VB bits still on it).
All that being said, I will not make any calls on it until I have inspected the car in person though.

That SL might be dealer done, not factory done and stamped on the Holden ID plate. |

I believe Leo Pruneau is from Canada, close to the USA, but not correct. A bit like calling a Kiwi an Aussie isn't it ? Dr Terry |

Far be it from me to disagree with you, Dr Terry, but in this case I have to. They are completely different. One is a compliment, and the other an insult.

Hahaha, I work for an American company, so we have a few yanks, but we also have a Canadian who sits near me. It's a constant s***-stir over people mistaking the accent, yet to those of us around him on a daily basis, it really is blatantly obvious! He gave up correcting people several years ago.
The compliment/insult thing has come up several times. He now refers to himself colloquially as a Queenslander after one of the 'locals' explained to him why NSW people sometimes call Victorians "Mexicans" - but we still haven't let him in on the fact that a "banana bender" isn't an actual machine to put the curve in a banana. |
