The TH350 wasn't a 'option' as such. It was the standard auto trans fitted behind a 5.0 V8. So 6-cyl & 4.2 V8 got the Tri-Matic as their auto, but the TH350 was exclusive to ALL VC 5.0 autos.

It was eventually replaced by the Tri-Matic in Nov 1981 for the 5.0 V8, so even the first few months of VH 5.0 had the TH350.

Hi mate was the VC your looking for a Tuxedo Black over Aztec Silver car? Or all black as I have something sitting at my place that might take your breath away and it's not the one being discussed hear but another VC I have that's very similar to the one you just described and it's got a lot of VH bits on it like rear boot garnish, tail lights, etc etc and it has a manual gearbox that looks to be factory fitted.
I don't want to get into discussions here about the 8th month 1980 VC that I'm telling you about now so if you can shoot me through a couple of things that could confirm the other VC VH car i have maybe the one your chasing maybe between the two of us we can work out if it's the one your looking for. I will tell you now that the second shadow tone car i have is a 8th month 1980 and it too is black over silver. Was the car your looking for like that or was it all black in colour? The one I have also has a Grey interior.
I'm a very big collector and have quite a few rare gems lying around so please be confident that what I'm telling you is the truth, I may be able to help.
Cheers, Damo.

And yes, the prototype VB being discussed here didn't have any I'd plates fitted until 1979.
So you are correct in saying the proto's had no I'd plates.
This car was driven by Leo and Chris Emmerson bought it from GMH at Fishermans bend, that's why it was saved.
Chris has since given me the original books for the car.

Hi Damo
Holden also had a manufacturers responsibility to sell products that are compliant and meet standards etc. Most experimental and proto's were pretty chopped up and not really fit for sale so were scrapped to avoid any issues. Back then a few slipped through the cracks I suspect...

Our old car was an all tuxedo black VC SL/E 308, 4spd manual & 3.08 lsd. The interior after the styling dept. had finished with it was black carpet, grey/silver velour door trims with back carpet kick panels armrests in the rear were the extended versions found normally on the front doors modified to fit the smaller rear doors. Grey/silver velour headlining. All black velour VH SL/E seats with rear headrests/folding armrest. The dash and centre console was darkish grey VC version, the dials were black background with dayglo orange/red painted numbers & letters..we also fitted the single spoke SL/E steering wheel. Externally the car had been changed to VH. front guards, bumpers, bonnet and radiator support had been modified to accommodate larger headlights, indicators and smaller grill. Originally it had a chopped up VC egg crate grill but we chucked that and fitted a tuxedo black painted VH grill with the single SL/E badge to the left. We swapped out the 1 VC taillight and chucked the other VH style mock up taillight the styling guys had been playing around with I guess and fitted VH SL/E lights with extensions. One thing we didnt change externally were the rear door vents the VC had the thicker slats as opposed to the finer VH style. It also had the 3 piece VC HDT rear spoiler. We also swapped the wheels to the 10 Slot VH SL/E from the mixed bag of wheels that were on it. Regretfully we added the SL/E chrome trims around the front and rear lights on request when selling it. the extra chrome wasn't needed...
Now the stereo was a 9 speaker roof console tape deck and graphic equaliser unit with 2 large amps in the boot. There were 2 speakers on the back parcel shelf, 1 in each door, 1 on top of the dash and 2 under the front seats. Im not kidding. The under seat speakers were cut and steel boxed into the floor and this will be a telling feature in identifying this car. A digital Eurovox? unit was also fitted in the factory slot in the dash. As far as build dates are concerned Im going through some of my dads old papers to find some photos or rego slips etc. So will let you know if I find anything that may help. If you have a photo you can upload thatd be great.
It would be nice if it was the car and to see that it ended up with an enthusiast rather than wrecked. PM me your details and we can have a chat
Cheers

Not many were scrapped WB. Most stuff was sold off via dealer tender registerable or not.

Yes EFI conversion could have been done ( all bolt on stuff) , in 1985 (NZ) we did not have any access to option codes like we have now . I think this is total nonsense that the 'option codes were checked out' but maybe in Aussy they were available ? Mark.

Hi Damo,
Haven't heard from you re the black VC/VH I'd mentioned. Do any of the items mentioned correspond with the car you have?
Cheers

Back to my prototype VB VC SLE being discussed here.
I had an interesting day yesterday spent with Chris Emmerson and his wife Tess at their house in country Vic.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, I had arranged with Chris via email to meet him in the new year and discuss his early GMH days in the Styling and Design studios of GMH and also to talk about and confirm my VB VC SLE Commodore prototype.
Well that meeting took place yesterday Thursday 29th Jan 2015 at 10.45am.
The day couldn't have gone better, Chris is a great guy and his wife Tess more than welcoming and a great maker of banana cake and cups of tea!
I spent around three hours with Chris in his drawing room where he showed me many GM projects he had worked on including the Commodore.
Some of these included the:
First Monaro ' s.
The GTRX Torana prototype.
HQ.
HJ.
WB.
VB.
VC.
AND VH COMMODORE.
Also the blue prototype Bagshaw? Monaro 4-door sedan.
Harry Firth's White with red pinstriped Monaro.
WA prototype that never went ahead and current generation Monaro.
A lot of important history in this man.
Chris again confirmed my car to be the VB prototype from late 1977 early 1978 that was originally painted all black and was allocated to him by management to use as the VC Prototype Shadow tone SLE in early to mid 1979.
The only thing Chris said he got wrong was where the car was painted.
It was not painted in the wood shop as he first told me but painted in the plaster shop. That was where the spray booth had been set up.
The wood shop was where all the moulds for badges etc were made. The plaster shop was sort of next to it where the small spray booth was set up to paint cars etc.
Chris also told me it was where he actually masked my car up to be painted.
He also did the red and blue pin stripes on it. Chris said there was an internal turntable to display prototypes and the outside turntable, my car was displayed on both.
Again, Chris said the car was driven by Leo in 1979 and it wasn't until 1979 that the car was fitted with I'd tags.
When the car was first in the Styling studio Chris said it had no identification tags or markings on the chassis to say what it was.
Chris also said to have a look under the bonnet engine cover material as there was something written there by him.
Sure enough when Chris Emmerson and i had a look yesterday the original chalk writing by the man himself was still visible!
Chris then proceeded to autograph the glove box lid and drivers side sunvisor.
The glove box autographed in the familiar "EMMERSON" way of all Chris's works and the sunvisor done the same with an added line, "designer of the shadowtone" after it.
When i am able to do so i will post some photos of the day.
Chris is still in communication with Leo and a guy from interior design and will be forwarding my details on to them so as to discuss the car. Interesting that Leo lives not far from my Mum.
Chris and i have also arranged to attend the Holden museum in the SLE Prototype together in a couple of months time so should be an interesting day.
Thanks again to Chris and Tess for welcoming me into their beautiful home.

Cheers, Damo.

Great thread this one. What a score! Hey could you ask Chris if he knows anything about the 30 Top dealer specials with the HDT engines? I have one but really struggle to find out any info from anyone. Im in the process of returning it to original as we speak. Would love to know more about them. Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback.
When the car arrived at our place it was all black however it could have left the assembly line as a tagged two tone. As you know the styling team changed many things when going through the styling process. The reason I say it could have been a two tone was that the door trims were silver/grey velour top with black carpet kick panels also the dash & console was grey in colour.
Regarding the stereo, the standard position on the dash housed a factory Eurovox unit. The dash was unmodified. The large stereo I mentioned was roof mounted extending from the rear view mirror to the interior light. The stereo incorporated the light. The main custom install (done by styling) was the under seat (front) speaker boxes cut into the floor to accommodate 6x9 speakers. This will identify the car without question. The amps in the boot were just screwed to the back of the rear seats.
Look forward to hearing from you. PM me if you want to discuss.
Regards
Warren B
