can anyone help me with a couple of bell housing part numbers, im of the understanding that a hk type 1 bell housing with a part number 3858402 is the one with a right hand fork entry on the early HK's and im wanting to know what's the difference is between that one and another bell housing that is a right hand fork entry with a part number 3858404,

so in short what's the difference between a 3858402 and a 3858404 bell housing

Hi montor .. in this case there is only the last number that is different in the part number and my suspicion is that one is a bare part number and the other is an assembly number...

....the bell housing assembly number could be the most minor detail....as in a clutch boot seal or the fork ball socket etc. etc. fitted and supplied as a unit

The part 3858402 shows for the 307,327 motors and is a USA part number. The chance is that 3858404 is for some other USA vehicle.

The HK V8 manual bellhousing is a multifit 10.5" with knockouts on both sides for left or right clutch fork. The cast numbers are from memory one digit different to the part number, when cast the bellhousings had 2 x cast numbers on them 3858403 and 3858405 (or possibly 3858401 - going from memory here!). The cast numbers were on the knockout piece for the clutch fork, so when you knocked out the hole for a RH fork you removed 3858405 and vice versa for the LH side. The 2 x part numbers with 2 and 4 on the end are the part numbers for the ready to fit RH and LH entry bellhousings with the appropriate clutch for holes knocked out. Over the years i've bought a few broken or cracked original HK 307/327 housings for the LH side knockout piece to weld into imported examples that are missing the LH entry knockout. I just can't recall if the LH entry cast number ended in 1 or 3.

...I'll rephrase my response to montor and put a different light on the question....

...you're wandering around a swap meet and find a bellhousing with the number 3858402....

....you go back home and check the parts catalogue and there is no sign of 3858402 but you find the number you have looked up is 3858404 ??...

...a cast number to the average bloke looks like a part number, and i'm pretty sure that's the guts of the question..... if montor has such a bellhousing with either number able to be confirmed, we can all start racing for the parts books to get to the bottom of it....

thanks guys for the responses,

to help get to what im asking is, im chasing a bell housing for my HK 307 Monaro and I was of the understanding that 3858402 was the part number bell housing im looking for,

I have been offered a bell housing with a right hand fork entry with the number 3858404, the guy says that the number matches another bell housing that is on his mates HK 327, so im trying to find out if the 3858404 bell housing is a correct bell housing for my HK 307,

hope this helps the question

I just checked in the shed. I have 2 x 1968 10.5" LH fork Camaro bellhousings, which are the same casting as the Aussie RH fork one but with the LH fork knockout removed leaving the RH fork one in place. These are both casting number 3858403. I do have an original HK-HT RH fork bellhousing but unfortunately the LH side knockout has been broken so the casting number isn't intact.

So on the surface it appears they may go like this:

Bellhousings start as the same cast number. LH knockout has cast number 3858401 on it, RH knockout has cast number 3858403 on it.

Part number 3858402 is created by removing the RH fork knockout and drilling/tapping the clutch fork pivot hole on the RH side. This leaves the cast number 3858401 on the LH side knockout.
Part number 3858404 is created by removing the LH fork knockout and drilling/tapping the clutch fork pivot hole on the LH side. This leaves the cast number 3858403 on the LH side knockout.

BUT this is still speculation only. I have some US info that says part number 3858403 has cast number 3840383 on it. So possibly the number left on the knockout on a RH fork bellhousing (3858403) is actually the PART NUMBER that is meant to be removed on a LH fork install, the bit removed for the RH fork may well have had cast number 3840383 on it.

So as to exactly what is 3858404? Still not sure! Have a look here, maybe email them:

...good work HK1837 .. could the 3858404 number relate to a parts book part number for the LH throw out on a mechanical clutch HQ GTS350?....

....it would still have the 3858403 knock out number on the RH side but by this stage showing a difference for the RHD application...possibly a tapped hole in the upper LH side of the housing for the later style HQ mechanical throw out pivot ??

Didn't the HQ have an 11" clutch hence the bigger flywheel? These type are later part and cast numbers and don't have a RH fork option due to the relocation of the starter snout.

I'm not sure if the links above work, but the photos are of the 3899621 HT+HG 350 bell housing, which I believe is the same for HQ350 and Muncie. There is no left/right knockout facility on this one, and it suits 168 tooth ring gears and 11" clutches.
Because there is no left/right trickery, and no variations, the casting number also seems to be the part number.

I have been informed by a very reliable source that the HK V8 bell housing (part number 3858402) is the 3858404 cast number bell housing, thanks to everyone for their time to help with this, cheers

Did you find out what the actual part number is for the LH fork bellhousing with 403 on it is?

That info would then indicate that they go like:

3858402 part number has 3858404 cast number - this is the RH fork one.
?????? part number has 3858403 cast number - this is the LH fork version.

Does it make sense that the LH part number is 3858401?

I just found a reference on a US site that says the part number changed from 3858401 (with cast number 3858403) to part number 3858403 in June 1966. I guess the RH fork one may have also changed from 3858402 part number to 3858404 at the same time, and it was late enough to not make it into HK parts catalogues. This may explain why I see the 403 number thrown around on US sites as both PART and CAST number, and probably explains why you've been quoted 3858404 as a part number today.

reply to HK1837 on the 3858403 part number bell housing,

just spoke to Greg Thackray and he has a couple of 3858403 part number bell housings with the LH fork entry, he checked to see what the cast number is on them and confirmed that they are casted with the identical number 3858403

Thanks mate. I know the LH fork ones had 403 on them as I have two. It was their part number that interested me, whereas we knew the RH fork one had part number 402 and needed the cast number.
