Still hard to go past Tuckey's description of the standard A9X engine, when compared to a famous HT GTS 350.
(KNK777).
"An uncooked crumpet" is how he described it.

From memory the A9X went a bit harder than its normal L31 optioned LX, primarily due to the lack of an engine driven fan. But they were never going to be a fast accelerating car with 2.60 and 3.08 rear axles with a tall 1st gear and ER70H14 tyres. The car's finesse was in how well it drove compared to most other GMH product that came before it, particularly compared to LH and LX prior. The A9X holds great fascination for a whole legion of Torana fans, but in reality the car that they saw racing was worlds away from the road car, in fact the successful cars in most cases were a spare part body shell - in some cases not even a spare A9X shell. Whereas the series production cars were essentially the same thing minus Firth-like cheats!

i love these forums...

lets just say, if you even get a chance to drive or go for a drive in either a XW GTHO, XY GTHO, or early XA HIport 4v, you will never want to even look, sit, drive or own a GM produced so called muscle car. I am a GM man through and through, but they are far more superior than anything GM ever offered.

and as far as an A9X goes...well that's another joke

Actually, a lot of the race A9Xs were LH L34s, as Holden sold a kit to convert your L34 to A9X.

The road A9X did not need a race engine as ADR27a applied to the late LX, allowing for the fitment of the previous model engine.

Which one is better than which is in most cases a matter of opinion. Straight line figures, accelleration figures, handling etc etc all mean different things to different people.

I think you mean GMH Frank! A GTHO wouldn't even see the dust of a proper GM muscle car eg ZL1 Camaro, 1970 LT1 or other such insane stuff!
On the road I totally agree with you, but on the race track (with Harry's help) they weren't that much better that the GMH product, the HT GTS350 outdid the XW GTHO on a few occasions, and even the LC's were competitive over an endurance race, not because of power but the package itself (fuel, brakes etc).

I would not even bother driving a XW-Y GT-HO or the like nowadays as even my old VY SS ute could hose them off, even the little old 928 Porsche is what I call a truly inspiring car to really drive flat out, it's like f that was great lets go back and do it again, but an old falcon you would be like no thanks, sure I like the engine noise flat to the boards and the big cam noise but that's about where it ends with the old falcons.

I like the recent hunt by AMC, they are now talking about Wolves in Sheep's clothing and Sheep in Wolves clothing.

My person take on the whole thing is that the manufacturers offered "sports" models at a number of different levels. We all remember the top line "Muscle cars". For us these are the cars that were designed to compete at Bathurst in production racing.

The others were there as many others could not afford them or want that much performance. (remember a GTHO was the most expensive XW/XY/XA, including the Fairlanes)

So I put these cars in three classes, your outright "Bathurst special" your "almost Bathurst special" the "performance car" he performance cars are those with some hint of more sporty than the standard sedan/coupe

In some models they will offer a number of these, for example in the XY Falcon range, 1 XY GTHO, 2 XY GT, 3 XY GS. I would include XY GS with 351 engine in 2.

For Holden an exanple might be 1 LH SL/R5000 L34, 2 SL/R 50000, 3 SL/R and G Pack.

By the end of the 70s ARDC changed the rules as ADR27a does not go with motor sport, but specials were still made, ie XC Falcon, 1 Cobra 351M, 2 Cobra 351A, GXL 351, GS 351 3 Cobra 302, GS and GXL without 351. HZ, 2 GTS with 5.0, 3 GTS 4.2, Sandman

After this time you would have very few 1s but still plenty of 2s and 3s. They are still popular today, with VE SS in 2 and SV6 in 3.

Warren
XY 351 GS only has the 2V heads and 2 BBL carby and it has a smaller cam then the GT, but I will say the 2V 351 was nice but she does not really cut it to be mentioned with the XY GT to be fair as that could upset some GT people for sure.

Ho-hum. You're a bit of a broken record Frank. We all get that you are in love with these cars. In fact it seems to be all you are able to contribute.
I have personally driven several from your list, and even raced one of them at club level for a couple of seasons. I personally prefer the GMH flavour as a road car, as is my right.

This makes your "if you even get a chance....." prediction of my behaviour incorrect.

...Hi all .. have to admit that when in the early '80's I was driving the '350 in earnest as my daily car, ol' mate had an automatic 1970 Vermillion Fire Clevo XWGT...

....I never quite got over how "grunty" this thing was, with its locker diff and heaps of low down torque...also the black interior and "sit up and bark stance" looking over the bonnet made me feel like this was something to be wary of, and a good jigger to watch out for when it came to an informal drag....

...the HQ with its white interior looked far more docile and soft, but it was a far more nimble thing to drive than the big, clunky GT....

...just a throw back to a few old memories from around the early '80's....Cheers fellas

As much as we'd both benefit from that, I think you already have enough unhealthy obsessions.
