Hi Gents,
Are there any reasons why I should not use a polytarp to cover a car stored in the open? (Using the better stuff that lasts 12 months)
What would be best to cover it?

Even in the lightest breeze, it will rub the paint & cause scratches.
There are commercial covers that have a soft lining, but even they say they are not to be used for long-term storage. The waterproof ones cause sweating on the underside due to the temperature differential as the day heats up & cools, and even the "vented" ones suffer from this. In only 2 weeks an expensive cover caused the paint on the roof strips on the in-law's WK Caprice to start peeling - that was caused by the heat & humidity that the cover traps.
I have the same dilemma, and after looking at the various options, the solution for me is to build another garage. |

I have used an Autotechnica cover for a few years in outdoor service. They are expensive as car covers go but well worth the money. However the UV gets them in the end.

How hard would it be to rig up some kind of removable frame you can set up around the car to drag a tarp over and keep it away from the paint work to allow drying / cooling? Might be an interesting project.

Not sure if they're still around, but you used to be able to buy "portable" garages that are basically just that - a steel tubular frame, and a tarp-like white plastic that goes over it. Similar in design & style to an early cheap portable gazebo, but with sides as well. Around 6m long by 3m wide. I have one in the garage that was given to me. Seeing how easily those gazebos become a hazard in medium-strength winds, I won't risk putting it up. |

You can cheap portable gazebo's that are 3m x 3m, and A friend got one that was a double, so 6m x 3m. He tied the corners down real well, and it lasted 10 months in the sun |
