A mate bought a new WB and said it was terrible to get into second gear from new. I think people have had more dramas with the Aussie 4 speed than any other box in history. Too say they were ever any good would be a bit too loyal for me. The column shift 4 speed in our 77 Hilux was a way better shifting gearbox than the poor old cheapskate Aussie 4 speed.

The M21 behind my 5 litre commodore has only had two seals replaced in the late 90s and its still a nice tight gearbox. Lots that complain are the ones that miss treat them.

VTs aren't powered by 'Chevs'. They have either Ecotec V6s, Holden V8s or GM-Powertrain V8s.

Now your joking any 4sp on the tree is just rubbish just like the 3sp.

Your Aussie 4sp must of had something wrong.

Never had any drama with the one in my WB, except stuck in first and reverse on various occasions and being reduced to first and second when the poxy plastic connected broke on third and forth 400km away from home.
You can not seriously compare a Aussie four speed to any Japanese box from the same era. They are just complete crap.
Oh and mine has never wanted to go into second when it's cold, nor my brothers WB which has been well treated just as mine has.

My WB has 260000km on it. So far as I know the box has never been touched. It still an awful gearbox though. If it wasn't a good original ute I would love to put a 5 speed in it. Not a Holden sourced one though.

I learnt to drive in a WB 3.3 4spd van that was a year old. I bought a 1979 HZ Kingswood SL L31 M21 sedan in 1984. And My first car bought in 1983 was a very low kM HQ van 202 3spd with a new Speco centreshift. The aussie 4spd cars shifted heaps better than the 3spd, never hqd any problems. Far better to operate (other than the highway revs) than my LX hatch I had later in the 90's with a Celica 5spd with 3.28:1 1st - gears spread to wide for an old cast iron Holden engine!

The 3 on the tree linkage would drop out changing from 1st to 2ed if you changed gear too fast, then you had to stop lift the hood grab the linkage up and away you went again as it was just worn out linkage Speco 3sp shifter was the go back then.

I had a VG valiant Pacer that the gear stick came out in ya hand if you changed to fast.

I drove a mates girl friends Datsun 200B in 1986 and the shifter on that box was nothing to wright home about.
Over all the Jap box were good but they were only for small engines.

I quite like a good aussie 4spd with a good shifter, I know they aren't strong but when new are good. I had a really nice HJ Belmont sedan around 2000, it was a mild 202 with 3.55 rear axle and a W57 Supra box, it shifted nice and was a pleasure to drive. Its suspension was done really well by Peddars and had a late HX set of rails with RTS geometry. It was my second last everyday drive Holden, only had the HZ Overlander after it. From then on I had VS ute, VY SS ute, V2 CV8, VZ Cross8.

'71 Torana LC 4 speed, enthusiastic 1st to 2nd and threw the shifter onto the back seat Ha! Ha! quick weld-up and I was back in action.
Trivia:- first mass production 3 on the tree Pontiac 1938.

I just moved my LJ GTR into new storege yesterday ,M20 is still ok to use just dont hurry the shifts . The M20s got a bit of a bad reputation for selecting 2 gears at once , but alot of the time it was linkages not adjusted corectly or another big proplem was people who new better would lubricate all the linages which over time all the dirt stuck to them and made a real propblem.Mark

more trivia...I had a 38 Hudson Terraplane which had the similar gearchange to a lot of buses, it was a bar fitted to the steering column, had a little lever in it like a remote control car etc, you could flick it to the gear you wanted, hit the clutch, and it would change gear, bit like the Wilson pre-selector box on Daimlers and lanchesters. Might even have been one but it was electrically operated,
I was too new to cars to really understand it all.
