Was chatting with my wife about this matter, and and i know that you cannot have mainstream car insurance on an unregistered vehicle...so what if you purchased a car brand new and decided not to register it...would the standard factory/dealer warranty still apply?...race cars obviously not included LOL!

Some large sites have vehicles that don't get used on public roads and therefore don't get registered so they are covered the same as other plant and equipment for insurance purposes.

Shannons will insure an unregistered car, undergong resto etc, so why not get insurance for an unregistered car sitting in a garage.

..the conversation led to the thought that new vehicle warranty may be unavailable if the brand new vehicle is sold to an individual (or enterprise)...but not registered ....hence that grey area

Unless it's expressly stated in the warranty, registration or lack thereof cannot preclude the manufactuners warranty obligations.
Motor vehicles are a consumer item, and are covered by the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012.
In Victoria, that act is enforced by Consumer Affairs Victoria.

There are some vehicle missing from the GMH service/warranty records, these obviously never had a warranty commenced.

You can have mainstream insurance on an unregistered car. I got insurance starting today on a new unregistered car (will be registered later in the week) I'm picking up later in the week. Had to have todays date to satify the company putting up the dough. I didn't need to furnish a registration number, only a vin number.

farm insurance will cover any vehicle. Rego has no issue with it. Cars are covered if you are on private land even if the driver is unlicensed. I only know this because I asked our agent what happened if one of my kids pranged one of our cars while driving around the farm.
So I would think your warranty would always come down to how you operated the vehicle. I doubt that mines get much warranty on any of their vehicles.

HK1837 is on to it .. it's the point where a car has been sold and duly released from Dealer stock as to when the proper warranty applies to the next incumbent....be it an avid collector or otherwise ??

A mate of mine bought an unlicenced xk120 and couldn't afford the rego etc for a while as it needed a lot of repairs, but he was able to get insurance.
I would say that the cars not listed for warranty were used for racing or such, you could not expect warranty for that.
I have a list somewhere from GMH showing a number of VN commys that were exculded warranty for that reason, and I believe it is not uncommon for dealers reps ( not just Holden) to attend gymkhanas, drags, navigation trials, and similar motoring events to obtain registration and or engine/chassis numbers for the express purpose of denying warranty.
the lesson is don't let anyone see your rego or chassis etc details.
I don't see why mines would not get warranty the car people know where they are going to be used, and the number of vehicles bought by mines would make it a very silly move for a manufacturer to deny warranty, I know of one case where a business not a mine who purchased about 150 cars a year they had a service problem that the dealer would not rectify it was a tailshaft vibration they had it balanced and rebalanced and new unis etc but flaty refused refused to replace the tailshaft so the supplies officer at the company when ordering the next years cars which were replaced every 40,000 or 2 years he simply crossed that maker off the shopping list and went to a rival manufacturer so both the dealer and the manufacturer missed out. for the sake of a tailshaft worth about $800 I think the loss was a deal worth that year over a million and for the next few years as well. then they had to do a super deal to get the business back.

Mines would struggle under normal warranty for commercial vehicles I would imagine. They are used under extreme conditions usually in extremely corrosive conditions.
They may however have some other negotiated warranty.

I agree John, a lot of those missing were probably race cars but they were never registered or probably even sold through a normal dealer or they'd be recorded in the service/warranty report (reports were for service as well as warranty). There are a few XU1's underlined in the microfiched LC-J report that may have been purposely underlined on the original master paper report to possibly signify that there would be no warranty claims entertained. Even HQ 350/Caprice's that were never built for sale to premises on Australian soil appear in the HQ report (note that Consulates are not technically Australian soil). Whereas cars destroyed or sold as wrecks prior to reaching a dealer's stock are missing (there are gaps were the HX LE's burnt in Perth would be in the report for example). Then there is the odd car not reported by the dealer when the reports were done, I've found a few mainly NZ delivered HZ's that are missing, they were completed about 1-2 months prior to the end of the HZ report but the paperwork has not yet made it back for entry into the IBM360 prior to the reports being run.

Nice topic, a lot of this would be subject to the warranty in the contract and the legislation that applied at the time of sale/delivery. I wouldn't have much sympathy for someone who bought a "road car" who then broke it on the race track and expected warranty coverage. It would be different if I was clear about the use and there was explicit offer of warranty terms..
I was thinking the OP was asking along the lines of buying a potential collector car, I would have thought that the dealer delivery date would start the warranty (and rego might not matter), but I am pretty certain that the km / periodic months service schedule would. I dare say if you wanted a 3 year factory warranty on a "laid up" collector you might have to pay the dealer to send their service guys or an accredited agent to carry out the monthly cycles even with zero km on it. But at the end of the day I really wouldn't see the point an unregistered new collector car is hardly likely to be worth anything as an investment until long after any warranty would apply.
I have heard the Shannon's adds that offer laid up insurance so if it was stored you can probably insure it against loss fairly easily.

I think the issue was a car could be regoed as a demonstrator and supplied by a dealer to a privateer for a race meet with the dealer's advertising all over it. Then after the race sell it on the lot as a used car but still with new car warranty.

...you do hear from time to time how a car was purchased and for whatever reason not registered, put away and never driven... i guess a scenario may be this....

... the original buyer has then decided to relinquish ownership when the car is only three years old...with still say two years to run before its warranty period expires...

... the next owner, having registered it, finds issues starting to pop up and duly enquires as to a warranty claim which (by rights?) should still be valid....

....the Dealer finds it was in fact never registered from new and the head scratching begins....hence that grey area....

....it's a quirky scenario....i should ask a Dealer i s'pose LOL
