I am looking to purchase a HJ ute with a 308, four speed gearbox with GTS dash, guards, grill and lights. I am wondering if this was a factory option or has been done later down the track? Is there a way to confirm this as well?

Get the tag details to check factory configuration.
The changes you mentioned are common but could be part of a special package ie Sandman (V8, four speed and GTS dash).
GTS guards were only on GTS but flutes can be welded in.
I dont think HJ GTS had twin headlights.

HJ Sandman got HJ GTS front sheetmetal, grille, headlight surrounds but no GTS badges. It also got the GTS's dash early on but later got the U17 instruments with a black fascia. 308 and 4spd were optional on HJ Holden ute and HJ Kingswood ute, and also optional if either was a Sandman (HJ Sandman ute got 173 as standard until very late in HJ when it got a 202 and HJ Kingswood Sandman got 202). The U17 instruments were an option on any HJ ute.

You can never pick a HJ Sandman ute from ID plates unless it is a Brisbane body which showed XX7 or XU3 on the body plate. The only way to pick one is by the console mounts.

I have been given the following numbers from the owner so far, I am going to view the vehicle on Sunday. Can anyone decipher anything from what I have been given I have worked out that engine number is for a 308 so far.

Thanks for that Dr Terry so the engine is not original from manufacture, will this affect the value at all?

If the engine is correct for that model, i.e. it has the correct fittings & plumbing & the conversion has been carried out professionally, then the fact that is a 5.0 & not a 4.2, could well increase its value or least retain the same value.

It depends mostly on if it's a Sandman or not. How original it is etc etc.
only if it's an excellent survivor car or a Sandman will the running gear be important. Otherwise the value is purely determined by the condition of the ute.

Also the cast code on the block can tell you if the motor is approximately the same age as the body for the sake of confirming that its a period correct modification. A later model engine transplant (HX or HZ) may not have the same configuration of accessories as the HJ or you may want to check whether the air cleaner is the right type or whether it needs a preheat diaphragm and tube on the intake trumpet.

ALL HJ V8 will have the air pre-heat set-up on the air cleaner snorkel.

The ute runs, but the body needs a quite a lot of work to get back up to scratch it has rust in most of the classical places and such. It looks like it has old repaired crash damage in the right b pillar which needs to be rectified as well.

Maybe go to mysandman site and check the identifying a HJ Sandman section. If it ticks any of the boxs it may be worth a serious look. If it's just a bitsa then its not really worth a lot. Check tags and chassis match for a start.
