Hello
I am in South Africa and am restoring a 1971 GM Ranger and found this plate on the trimatic auto box. Can anyone decode the S GMH B for me. It is mated to a 4cyl 2500 GM engine. The car was built in Port Elizabeth South Africa, but I thought the trannys were mated to 6cylinders not 4 cylinders. Any help appreciated...I can not get the pictire to load... here is the info Plate is blue S GMH B
Serial number is 0057882 across the top GENERAL MOTORS HOLDEN PTY (LTD) MADE IN AUSTRALIA
What does the S B designation mean? I know the GMH is General Motors Holden.

The SB is the ID code for which engine size the trans is built to suit. These boxes were fitted to 4,6 and 8 cylinder engines here in Oz and so they have different valve body spring sizes to determine gear shift points and different numbers of clutch plates depending on how much torque they had to handle. I'm not aware of SB as a code for any local trans here so it must be set up for your specific application. The serial number means it is the xxxxxth Trimatic made. I have seen number 1,000,000 !! The serial numbers may have started at 1001 I think, like TH400, engines and other such GMH stuff of the era.
You'll find trimatics in Australia behind 4cyl engines in GMH product like Torana, Sunbird and Gemini and also in Toyota Corona. I think the Ranger used a 1.9L Opel engine like the LH-UC 4cyl Torana and LX-UC Sunbird and a 2.5L version too. |

Hi and in the USA they were called a turbo hydramatic 180 ( Trimatic)

Sort of. The original GM-Strasbourg Tri-Matic with the cable kick-down is more closely related to the TH180. It was really only suitable for 4 & 6 cyl engines. The Aussie Tri-Matic had a much stronger gearset. About the only part(s) directly interchangeable would be the pan gasket. I've never seen an SB code (or any S* code) Trimatic, I only have listed F*, H*, L*, K* & T* codes. Dr Terry |

This is great info. Could I have some help in how to post here a picture of the ID plate on the tranny. I believe it would help. i am basis format mode and when i hit the insert image it does not allow the image to be moved or copied inside the text. I could email the pics to someone who then could post picture?

google gm ranger and will see dome coupes that look like t-g im not talking about the one we sent there as kits either.
