Hi all.

I have a standard 67 HR Premier sedan with factory front disc brakes. I want to fit some 14 x 7 chrome rims or period mag wheels. Body work (mudguard lip etc) is standard and I don't want to alter it. I was thinking of 195/65 front and 205/70 rear tyres.

Currently looking at some chrome rims on ebay which says 5/108 PCD and 4 1/2" backspace. What does 5/108 PCD mean? Will they fit OK without scrubbing etc and clear the discs?

It will be 5 stud x 107.95mm (which is 4.25"), the standard Holden pattern. No idea if they will fit or not spacing wise but the stud pattern look right. Check the centre bore size too. not sure if HD-HR is the same as HK-HG which these 14x7 rims will probably be.

It's splitting hairs, I know, but the pcd is actually 4.24"/107.7mm for both HR and HKTG. Make sure you get the right wheel nuts to fit the wheels too, as HK are a different angle.

Are you sure, I always thought Holden was 4.25", Ford 4.5" and GM 4.75".

I know it's only 10 thou, but GM is correct, FE-HG (& Torana LC-UC) wheel rims have a 4.24-inch PCD.

It's an interesting one, as it seems no one else has used this pitch but GMH.
I've read lots of stuff from various contributors to other forums who claim to have a friend of a friend with access to "the Holden blueprints" which confirm it is really 4.25 and that 4.24" must be a typo. The 4.24 number is in every service manual going back a long way, so that's a lot of typos!
I think it is more likely to come from someone deriving the 4.24" PCD from the stud to stud dimension for a 4.25 PCD, which is almost exactly 2.5", by using good old sine tables, which round off the value of sine 36 degrees to 0.59. This calculation gives a result of 4.24".
I've also heard conspiracy theories about it being done to make it impossible to use other than GMH wheels, but given the choice between a conspiracy and a stuff up, I'll take the stuff up every time as the likely reason.

I'd never noticed it before, but I looked in a HK shop manual and there it is 4.24". I've never seen it elsewhere other than on wheels themselves (as 4.25) or quoted in 3rd party sources as 4.25". I'd also not put it past being a mistake either, I looked at a couple of pages in the HK shop manuals looking for it and spotted a few other errors.

If it is a typo, it's one of monumental proportions !! It's mentioned in every workshop manual, features book, technical spec sheet & engineering report, etc. etc. from FE to HG, Torana LC to LJ & even the VC/VH 4-cyl Commodore.

It could be a rounding error in maths calculations as GM has mentioned, & at 10 thou (which is only 5 thou in the radius) this is smaller than some machinists error tolerances.

Some of the aftermarket wheels that I've seen over the years, have been manufactured in factories with machining tolerances far worse than that.

Byron, what errors have you found in the HK workshop manual ? The only ones that I know of are incorrect photos.

The first one I saw was on page 1-4 of the Shop Manual - body and sheetmetal. It shows a HK body plate, lists the TRIM line as:

"The trim numbers represent the interior paint colour and trim combination". Blatantly incorrect for HK.

I can't remember where the second one was, I saw it whilst flicking through to wheels.

The HK Monaro-Brougham supplement contains many errors in the speedo gear tables on page 4-18, mostly affecting Powerglide and Saginaw. This was fixed in the tables on page 4-4 of the HT supplement.
I don't of know of many blunders in the HK mechanical shop manual. (Apart from photos, as you say Terry)
