There are 5 models in Monaro: 80337, 80437, 80737, 80837, 81837, and 3 "Series Names": Monaro Coupe, Monaro GTS Coupe and Monaro GTS 350 Coupe.

There is actually 7 models if you include HQ and HJ as there are 81137 and 81237 LS Monaro.

What l meant was that the HTG 80737 was a unique model were the 80837 was had an optional motor

True but 80837 is a unique model just as 80737 is and had a standard engine just like 80737 had a standard engine.

In HK it did but Bazza was talking about HT-HG I think. 186S was a different engine if Trimatic was fitted as the cam was different, but that is essentially par for the course, technically not that different to selecting an auto in HT-HG 81837 or even choosing an auto in most early HT V8 models (where you got a 307 rather than a 253).

I just quizzed Ben on the model coding.

Firstly GMH did try to hide the GTS327 in the early development (mid 60's), where it and the Brougham were both special vehicle packages on lesser models. By the time the car was releasd it wasn't as much as an issue anymore.
The Brougham and GTS327 were the first new Holdens given model codes after the HT model coding was locked in around (where 6cyl were odd and V8 were even codes). This is why both get even numbers for model codes as they are V8's. 0837 was already reserved for V8 HT so 1837 was the next obvious code to use I guess.
The first HQ special vehicle package was the Chevrolet 350, next was the SS sedan then the GTS sedan and the GTS350 sedan (with other non-Holdens or other usage in between eg the V8 XU1 sits just before the XW8 (GTS350)). It would appear that in the case of the GTS sedan the vehicle was meant to be seen as a mainstream model and thus was given its own unique model code at the next series release - this is what happened with the GTS sedan in HJ. I'd bet that the change in the HQ GTS sedan's VIN coding from N to Q co-insides with the lock-in of the upcoming HJ's model codes. Unfortunately GMH never afforded this luxury to the HX and HZ Sandman for which they even claim in their own literature that the HX-Z Sandman is meant to be a totally separate vehicle rather than as a Belmont, Holden or Kingswood as it was marketed in HQ and HJ.

The Chev 350 (Statesman) SUP/CKD (and afaik local consulate car) was apparently the first HQ special vehicle package to be introduced, coded as XU7. The car even appears in the famous Lang Lang (I think) photo of the entire HQ model range.

The Engineering Technical data amendments are the interesting ones here.

In November 1967 the following models were added to the HK line up:

HK81469 Premier Brougham sedan
HK80337 Kingswwod coupe
HK80737 GTS coupe
HK80380 Kingswood coupe utility

February 1968 revised models are:

HK81469 Brougham sedan
HK80337 Monaro coupe
HK80737 Monaro GTS coupe

April 1968 model addition

HK81837 Monaro GTS '327'

When the coupe was officially given the go ahead and included in the engineering specifications it would appear that the L34 specifications were included, as there was no need to change some of the pages that were changed if they were not. For example the fuel tank. Specifications kept changeing, with the addition of radius rods in July etc.

Just on the next model number, why was 81837 the next obvious? I thought 81037 or 81637 would have been usable. It does show that once the 81469 was issued that teh HQ range was also updated for the Statesman deville and the 81569 and 81659 Statesman custom were Already there between February and April 1968.

They must have been having great fun creating or changing model codes back in those days. I've seen different GM-H literature showing these codes:-

HK Kingswood Ute - 80180 (Option XS5)
HK Monaro GTS 327 - 80737 (Option XT2)
HK Brougham - 80569 (Option XS4)

I've seen the same Terry, XT2 as the GTS327 and XS4 as the Brougham. L34 is the 327 engine.

I did say I guess Warren. I'd say 816 wouldn't have been used if it was already allocated to a Statesman for HQ, and I don't recall 810 ever being used (or 820 for that matter).
