Higginbottom still do them but they give you a 60 thou over bore. If you want to keep your block going a bit longer with a particular oversize go to a smaller shop like LW Parry at Arncliffe (I'm not sure if they are still there). But one is going to be more expensive than the other.

Where abouts in qld are you? This may be an obvious thing to do but have you tried your local Yellow pages?

I don't think there's the market for that sort of service anymore, with even less demand in regional areas.

When locally made big sixes were common on our roads, Repco, Higginbottoms, Gem etc could afford to run 10-12 engines through at a time, put them on the shelf, and offer them on an exchange basis - reasonably economically. You could even source popular small car engines this way too - Gemini 4 cylinders, Corolla 1K/3K etc, 16R/18R/20R - because these cars were sold in decent numbers, unlike the pattern of the last 20 years where there's at least a dozen different makes in just about every segment, and hundreds of model options. Even the top selling vehicle in Australia accounts for less than 4% of our total new car market volume. A far cry from the days of the big 3 accounting for 60% or more of sales, and one model holding almost 20% of all new car sales.

Since those days where exchange engines were common, a number of things have worked against that industry, including:

1. Engines are lasting a lot longer, often the acceptable serviceable life of the car.

2. Diversity of the cars on our roads - long gone are the days when 50% of the national fleet were 6s & 8s from the big 3. They'd have to carry a much wider range of engines, and hold a lot more expensive stock, which simply isn't viable.

3. The popularity of cheap "wrecker" engines - not only for the Jap & other Asian makes, but for locally made stuff too - where you can buy a runner with 3 months warranty, for less than 1/6th the cost of doing a reco, and for most this is normally acceptable, referring back to point 1. You can buy a good running Commodore V6 from the 90s for less than $500. It would be at least $3K to reco one when you add in machining cost, labour & reasonable quality components. V8s are under $1000 for a runner (engine only, no accessories).
