Hey Guys,
Pulled the front guard/fender off the HK and sighted black adhesive type stuff between the panels. I'm assuming its a type of seam sealer. I have attached a photo to show. Just wondering what it is so I make sure I rebuild the car properly.

Also a HK brake question (I know another one hehe). Have a HK 186 which I was told the previous owner had discs on it. When I brought it, it had no brakes at all. I want to keep everything as close to original as possible but due to safety I am willing to upgrade to HQ setup. Having never driven a HK with standard disc brakes are they good/bad, should I upgrade? I know they have fade issues due to size/heat, just wondering how bad they are.
Its only going to be a weekend driver and I want to keep the HK original rims on. I have been told they cause issues with the HQ setup (steering full lock and rim size).

The seam sealer is described in the Holden manuals as "heavy type sealer", or "Mastic type sealant". As far as I can tell there are two main types - the one used to seal welded body seams, and the type used to seal things like the front fenders, the sub-frame to body and the window winder mechanism covers.
The first type is GMH part number 7425347, known as Elastite and made by a now defunct company called Nonporite. Avoid disturbing it at all costs, as it is full of chrysotile (white) asbestos. Your HK is full of it, in all the internal body seams and it's best left as is.
I can't be sure, but the type you are talking about is probably not as bad, and is most likely a mastic type sealer.
I'm using a flexible polyurethane sealer, known as Sikaflex 227, on my car for this application. Great stuff, except that 1 gram is capable of covering your entire body in sticky black mess. Have some acetone on hand before you use it, but beware as acetone will strip acrylic paint very efficiently.

As far as brakes go, it sounds like you are keeping your HK fairly standard and, while the HQ setup will stop better after a few heavy brake applications in a short time, I don't think you will outdrive the standard 0.5" discs with a 186 in a weekend driver.
If it was a V8 car and you planned on some track work it would be a harder decision, although I ran a 350 HT in club level motorsport with standard brakes and never had an issue.
Just my opinion, and I'm sure others will have different views.

I haven't come across anything with a white crystalline appearance. Most of this just chips off with a screw driver. I make sure I have a good dust mask on all the time either way.
I struggled to find a seam sealer as I live in a small town. I've grabbed some Repco stuff as a few people said while its not the best, its brush on which is good and will do a good job.
Thanks on the brakes reply. I wasn't sure which way to go. I figured if the standard HK discs would do for normal weekender type driving I would like to put them on and keep standard.
Now I just have to clean the 50 years of baked grease/oil and dirt off. Its like bitumen its that rock hard. hehe.

That's the problem with the elastite - the asbestos fibres are very fine and held in a bituminous compound. It's only when you disturb it that the fibres can become airborne.
If it's body deadener you're trying to get off a heat gun and flat metal scraper make it a bit easier, then a kerosene scrub. For both you and the car if you are underneath it.

If its rusty around the seams, will a good dust mask, glasses and gloves be good enough to remove elastite if I scrape or chip it off and not sand it? I don't want any rust problems down the line when I can fix it all now. The car is original, so with its age and sitting around unrego for 16 years its got quite a lot of surface rust I need to wire wheel/sand off for coating/painting.

It should be OK if you just scrape and chip, and it sounds like you are using the right PPE.

Can't help on the sealer side. Re brakes, I did the disc conversion on my HK, using the stock HK setup. I found them adequate for my 186 cruiser/daily driver.

Was a worthwhile improvement over the unassisted drums.
Attn camry drivers. The accelerator is the skinny pedal on the right.

Thanks Prem 350. As soon as I say HK people are telling me put an 8 in and HQ brakes. If you found the standard HK discs find for general driving then will get a set of them. Found some online for $145 pair of rotors $45 for a pair of calipers. This sound about right price?
