Hey Guys, I have an 1991 EA auto and it does not want to go into top gear (4th gear) I'm doing 95 @ 3000 rpm down the freeway last night. The oil level is spot on and it was changed not so long ago. any ideas?
Also can a EF auto fit to a EA? I think it should bolt straight on but just want to check as there is one I can grab at the wreckers.
Cheers Phill.

Have you noticed whether you are missing second gear too?

If you are then you have a snapped band.

An EF box will fit but *may* be electronically different which is no big deal as you just use your EA valve body in it if it is.

Bear in mind that EF2's had no trans dipstick & nowhere in the housing to retrofit one which can be a PITA so hopefully the wrecker has an EF series 1 box.

Whereabouts are you? a mate of mine has an EL which he will wreck or sell cheap in Canberra.

Hi Jim,
Second gear is good. it's only 4th that is not engaging. I just picked up my nephews Corolla and just towed it and went well but still no top (4th gear)
I was just speaking to a mechanic and he told me that a EF box will not fit!!! and I'm not saying your wrong. but I live in Tahmoor 2573 about 130 K's or an hour out Southwest from Sydney.
Next week I'm going to Bungendore that is about 25min from Canberra. if your mate can give me a call on 0413 415 435 that might be the answer to my problems.
To put a EL auto box in my EA. does it need to change any part like the valve body and electronics?
If your mate want's to give me a call. any time is a good time!
Thanks Jim, much appreciated.
Cheers Phill.

Tahmoor Huh?
I bought my current car from there so I know it quite well.

Turned out less time consuming to pick up a car in Tahmoor than it would have taken to pick one up locally and then have to change the rego from ACT to NSW.

Also bought my son's trail bike in Picton.

I don't understand why your mechanic reckons they are different boxes as the 3.9 and 4.0 (pre AU) share the same engine block.

Maybe ask the question on Fordforums.com.au as to whether they interchange or not.

Not going into 4th might be as simple as a sticky solenoid.

I'll see if I can get Glenn to call you.

Regards, Jim...

Tahmoor is getting popular ha ha.
My mechanic had some problem with that some time ago. I don't know what he did or the full story. but I just took his word for it as I though he knows best!
I will keep the box as a spare because I know it still drives.
Glen did ring me thanks and he seems like a nice guy over the phone too. however. I went to another mechanic between jobs to ask a simple question. I was offered an ED box and they can fit it tomorrow, then Glenn rang me 10minutes later! if only he was 10 minuters quicker! :-(
ohh well thaks for putting me on to him but If the machanic does not deliver tomorrow I'll be ringing up Glenn begging for help I guess. Ha ha.
Thanks again Jim, your help and input is much appreciated.
thank you.
Regards
Phill.

No Worries.

Have you tried contacting a transmission specialist about it? Dr Terry over on the Holden side of this site probably knows the answer to no 4th too. He is pretty cluey.

It may be a very easy fix no 4th. They are reasonably simple transmissions especially for a 4 speeder.

Basically I will do work inside a Trimatic, a torqueflite or one of these 4 speeders and not much else. Don't like the insides of a BW 35/40 at all.

No Trimatic is a 3 speed Holden Box

Borg Warner 35 and 40 were used in almost every auto 6 cylinder Falcon & Valiant from the late 60's until mid way through the EA (1992 for utes and vans).

Your will be a Borg Warner or BTR 85LE I believe.

Heys guys sorry I never got back to you how it all ended up.
I had another gearbox so we did the swap. this time it was worse than the last.it never went into 4th same again. and the gearbox was not going down in gears when you pull up.therefore we had to drive it manualy. so we changed the gear selector. it's a white plastic box that bolts used two bolts 5/16th on to the left hand side of the gearbox and has two electronic clips that needs to be pulgged together. I was using the same gear selector when we put the newer gearbox in. when we changed to a different selector box the problem was no longer there. I have been doing some driving now and it's going real good. so it was only the white selector box that needed to be changed only.
I think my original gearbox maybe still ok. I'll keep it as a spare anyway.
Thanks for all those have helped me with this bugger of a mission. cheers Phill :-)
