Hey Dr Terry. I was sent to you by Jim on the Ford fourm. Jim has been very helpful to me and said you maybe able to help me with my EA Falcon gearbox problem.
It's a 4 speed auto and will not go into 4th (top gear)
The car drives fine in first, second, and third but will not move into fourth! when slowing down it shifts very well too. Today I had to rescue and tow my nephews corolla. it went well towing a corolla on a car trailer but still no forth gear.
I was doing 95K's down the freeway @ 3000 rpm. I tried to give a few revs in neutrual then put it back in drive whist driving and still went to third. have you have any ideas that may cause this problem? is this a common problem? I like to hear your feedback as it would be much appreciated. thank you.
Regards
Phill.
and shh, yes it's a FORD! sorry for tresspassing!:-)

Hi phill.

The BTR 4-sp auto in the EA, has a separate electronic control box, unlike the later Falcons which have their auto controlled by the ECU. Trying another control box is as simple as plugging another one in, no need for any scanner tools or PIN numbers.

If it's not throwing any fault codes, by money is on a valve body problem, even something as basic as a jammed shift valve.

The whole 1-2-3-4 shift pattern is controlled by only 2 solenoids, so any major solenoid or electrical issues would show up in other gears as well.

A test lamp & a circuit diagram can be your friends if you can understand that type of logic.

Dr Terry
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0
